happy world breastfeeding week!

:balloons: :balloons:

for those who don't know it this week is the week that the world celebrates breastfeeding. what can you do to be an advocate for breastfeeding? i would love it if everyone could give one suggestion. posts about the benefits & advantages to bf'ing are welcome to!

to be an advocate for breastfeeding during wbw i will:

-tell any mom that i happen to see nursing that what i think she is doing is wonderful & a beautiful gift that she is giving herself & her child!

benefits &/or advantages:

-better immune systems

-being able to cuddle & reconnect the minute you walk in the door from a long day at work (& missed baby terribly!)

In honor of this momentous week, my little Miriam and I cuddled up and had lots of nursies.

She seems happy to celebrate! :balloons:

Thanks for sharing! :chuckle Funny story! (Keep on embarrassing him too,way to go mom!)

...oh, they are lovely, thank you!! :rotfl:

This is the same child who would watch me nurse his baby brother and say, "I want some". He would pull up his shirt and place his Pooh Bear or his Ronald McDonald doll on his chest. When I asked what he was doing, he'd say "feeding my baby". We explained how papas could feed babies with bottles, so we had to get a bottle for Pooh & Ronald.

It is experiences like this that make me hope these little boys will be the future fathers who encourage their wives to nurse their kids. Husband support is a crucial indicator of breastfeeding success.

My husband is quickly becoming a breastfeeding radical after knowing all the facts about breastfeeding. He has determined that as a pediatric intensivist, he is going to insist as much as possible that "his" NICU babies will have banked breastmilk if their mothers can't or won't supply pumped milk. I think that's cool.

How funny!

I remember when baby #1 (21m old) asked to nurse, when I was nursing #2. I told him "okay" to see what he would do. So, he climbed into my lap, placed the nipple in his mouth, giggled, then got back down (he just wanted to know if it was okay, I think). I guess he decided it was brother's milk!

Have you heard about "Milkmen who breastfeed?" I was amazed when I read about this! It is an article about men who nurse their babies! Yes, there are very few (my own DH said their was NO WAY he would have nursed)! :rotfl: :rotfl:

If u r an avid viewer of ER (as I am) you may have even seen Dr. Lewis' husband, Chuck, nursing his son on the show. BTW he is an RN, to boot.

Background on men & bf'ing: long ago if mother died & there was no mother in the community to "wet nurse" dad would have to step in. Cow's milk or Goat's milk was considered to be deadly & only as a last resort (no pasturizing @ this time). Another reason: if mom passed on one of those long trips across the praries, dad would nurse the baby out of despiration & to comfort the baby! Breastfeeding is so much more then for the milk. The milk is the bonus!

My first 2 babies were in the NICU. I nursed them as soon as they were able to eat. I pumped so much milk that they never had to have formula while I was not at the hospital. My third child was early but not sick so she came home with me. I still miss it when you are nursing and your little one falls off the breast asleep with milk mouth. I nursed them until they quit at about 18 months. My sister is now nursing her first baby and I find myself wishing I could have another, then I wake up and ask myself "AM I CRAZY!"

Happy breastfeeding week!

...nursing is definately a blessing. I got my figure back quickly, and the attachment with my babies is indescribable. My husband was on sub duty on and off with our first son so nursing was great for us, the cuddling etc. Then as civilians we had our 2nd son. Husband was a big help. He'd change the baby while I emptied my bladder and readied myself to nurse. I had cracked sore nipples first couple of months and every feeding was painful. Afterwards, he would say, honey you've got another successful feeding behind you. Once I healed, he'd still help at night :) I nursed the first one 20 months (preg with 2nd), and #2 for 12 months. He wanted to be like his big brother and use a cup. I miss those days.

Wow that is great! I had no idea! For thos moms who say it's hard.....I'm still doing it and I'm a full time nursing student, work outside the home and have 2 older kids! I always tell people how awesome it is to breastfeed. My son is 18 months old now and I will be weaning him soon, but I have cherished anbd loved every minute of it. He's been sick less and is very healthy.
