GWINETT or GRADY new grad program

Published

Hi guys

Looking at all new grad programs in the area as i'm desperate for a job. Anyone have any info on the gwinett or grady programs? gwinett seems to not have the opening listed and claims to be full, but i don't know when they start their residencies and what not. also, what's the deal with grady? i think you have to have your actual license before they look at you, but even then there's no where to apply? THANKS!

Gwinnett already had their Resideny Open House. Unfortunately it's kinda late to be looking if you are graduating in May. I was invited to the Gwinnett Residency Open House and I applied back in January. I believe there open house was in early March.

South Fulton Medical Center is still taking applications for RN residents until April 17th if you are interested.

Grady has an excellent residency program for new grads. I volunteer in the ER there and love it. If you work a year at Grady, you can work anywhere.

Hi MFisher6 - Could you tell me what all you do for the Grady ER? I just interviewed with volunteer services for that department and am curious what all they have volunteers do to help out. Thank you in advance.

The volunteer's main job in the ECC is to assist with nurses and other staff with whatever they need help with within reason. I am 100% sure that Grady has taught me way more that I could ever learn without being in nursing school. I have seen so much and been able to do somethings to. I volunteer a lot on the weekend during the night. I usually come in and clean some stretchers in triage, which is the main job of volunteers it seems. Then i will walk around the ECC and see if anyone needs help with transporting patients or getting anything. I have taken vitals in triage and even done CPR on a cardiac arrest patient. Do not tell Brooke i did that. I have been able to see exactly what the nurses do and dont do. Also I have seen lots of trauma:

Gun shot wounds

Stabbings

Car wrecks

burns

births

deaths

and more.

I could go on about my time at Grady. I even have gotten the the point that I know most of the night shift nurses and other staff. I befriended a Grady EMS medic who helped me get into Mercer for nursing school.

I hope that answers your question. My name is Matt Fisher by the way

Thank you Matt! I appreciate you sharing your experiences there. I'm looking forward to volunteering soon. How long have you been volunteering at Grady? I am hoping that it helps me stand out on my application to nursing school.

I have been volunteering over a year. But just a warning, I had a that on my GSU app last time and a recommendation from a trauma nurse and i still didnt get in. MY GPA was a 3.29 and I had an 82 on the NET

Good to know. Thanks for the tip!

Grady says that you MUST have your actual license in hand to apply for the residency, no? meaning i can't do anything until after I take the nclex this summer, right? anyone know anything different/has anyone applied to their new grad program??

THANKS for all this info!

If that is indeed the case then they are pretty much the only hospital in the area to operate like that. If you waited for all the other hospitals until you get your license you will be left wihtout a job. Now is the time to apply...actually it was back in Jan/feb...but better late than never.

thanks,
