I took the Gurnick (Modesto) entrance exam this morning and passed, so now trying to get a spot in the night program starting next month. I did the FAFSA online and am also waiting for my (proof of) HS diploma to come in the mail... Hopefully fin aid will cover the tuition!
Anyone have exp at Gurnick applying for financial aid? Not sure I can get it because I'm still enrolled at my current college and the quarter ends on Dec. 15th... The pre-req class starts in Nov. I wonder if there is a payment plan.
Well, what an interesting couple of posts these were. Guess since you are both on your way to being Gurnick grads, you would lash out. Makes sense. My opinion didn't just magically form once I heard about the $1600. It built up from the start, from the first phone call and how they conducted themselves, and from the feedback I received from other peoples' educated opinions. Even before I decided to not pay the $1600, red flags were going off like fireworks.
The faculty over at CSU Stanislaus has never heard of Gurnick and has cautioned me against it. It is a for-profit proprietary school.
P.S. Have you posted defensive rebuttal comments on all the other anti-gurnick threads on this site, not just mine? Thought not.
You are entitled to your opinion, but the reason that I replied to your post and not other anti-gurnick ones is because you come off as very hypocritical. You said yourself you hung up the phone on them once you heard that you had to pay for pre-reqs. If they were so unprofessional when you called them the first time, why did you even go down there to test?? If you were listening the "other peoples' educated opinions" why did you go there to test?? If faculty members at CSU Stan cautioned you against it why did you go there to test?? Do you see where I'm going with this?? And why did you call back to say that you had all your paperwork together to enroll if you had seen so many red flags along the way??
As far as the faculty at CSU Stan not hearing about them, I wouldn't give that much thought due to the fact that Gurnick is accredited by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. I've done my homework on them. Go to www.bvnpt.ca.gov and see for yourself.
And being a "for-profit" school doesn't make them crooked or a scam. It's a business, of course they're out to make a profit. They do not get funding from the state to pay for supplies and faculty like MJC and Stan State does.
You said Gurnick is not for you, and that's fine, more room for myself and those of us who want to go there. But at least admit that it was because you were expecting not to pay a dime, and that wasn't the case. Since their next class is full they must be doing something right. And once again, I wish you the best of luck in your education.
I talked to the nurses/faculty at CSU and MJC and ALSO at Memorial Hospital before and after I took the test, so as you can see... I've also done my homework. Yes, it accredited, which I knew before, but so are other programs that also have a questionable reputation, meaning the students were not satisfied.
I'm going to say this again and hopefully it sticks this time...
I had doubts before I found out about the $1600. Anyone would after seeing the facilities and dealing with the staff (Modesto). Even if the one class was covered in fin aid and didn't cost 1600,I would have encountered all the people that talked me out of it and shed an educated light on the whole thing.
You can choose to believe that... or continue to write comments back to me to make yourself feel better.
P.S. I know someone that actually choose the Carrington College program over Gurnick, commuting over an hour from Modesto to San Leandro. He must have done some "homework" as well.
Good luck to you at Gurnick, (very) happy to make more space for you! :yeah:I'm completely sure you'll be a success. Peace out.

Actually, it often does mean exactly that. That's why there have been Congressional Hearings about them over this past summer and an investigation by the Government Accountability Office (as well as media outlets such as 60 Minutes).

a lot of my friends who graduated as lvn and rn who went to other schools are not finding work. some of them even had to move out of state to find a job. this is because the market is saturated with new grads coming out of school and most hospitals and ltc's are on a hiring freeze.
here is a posting from another board about getting a job once you graduate from school:

no lvns get hired easily in today's economic climate. employers do not care what school you attended, they care whether your license is clear and they care about your nursing work experience. "
please get your facts straight collegegirl209 before you post these negative posts about just one school you had a bad experience with
I do have the right to put my opinion of a school and it doesn't matter if you agree or not. Go for it. You're defensive because you're about to enroll there and supposedly have known some grads come out of there. Good for you, good for them. Bravo. It is for you, it's not for me... who cares.
Regarding the last "testimonial" that I posted, hate to break it to you... but according to the RNs at the hospital and CSU's program that I spoke with... they said that getting work would be more difficult coming out of Gurnick, than if I went to MJC's LVN program. So, as you can see... it's NOT just about the economy, it's about reputation.
I know a guy that is going to Carrington's LVN program and there is some negative stuff about them on this site and I don't see him going ******* on the posters of those comments. *******' calm down. Lol.
I'm going to do this board a favor and discontinue this remarkably ridiculas thread, because I know that you won't. I'm sure that will be a sigh of relief to a lot of readers. You're welcome.

that's the thing with people like her, they like to bring others down because they are unhappy. but apparently from her last post that's the last we'll hear from her. good riddance :)

Just like there were certain real estate and mortgage companies who made bad real estate deals which created the mortgage crisis. But does that mean that ALL real estate and mortgage companies are crooks?? No it doesn't. So you saying that "actually, it often does mean exactly that," is extremely naive.
