GTC 2011?

Published

Is anyone applying for Gwinnett Tech's Fall 2011 RN program? I submitted my application back in October (I really wanted to have enough time in case anything happened). I'm still waiting on the initial letter about the meeting for the entrance exam. Does anyone know when we're supposed to get that letter? I know the application due date wasn't too long ago (Jan. 15th) and with the snow, things are probably backed up a bit, but for some reason I thought we should already have word by now.

Busylife, I was starting to worry about you! By "my friend" you mean Mary? I am so happy for you two. Such hard workers.

Yeah, the 3000 was total for both years. So if 700 was the book and supplies (for the first quarter? or your whole 1st year?) that should be about right. Of course I LOVE to buy my books online, the bookstore prices are ridiculous.

Yes, by "my friend," I mean Mary. :) Okay. Now I'm going to be guessing who you are. :) I should go back and read the posts to figure this out, but are you the person who was in Microbiology with us or are you a current nursing student? And I am trying not to think about the cost. Honestly, I'm hoping what is left of my HOPE covers the tuition. If they ever process my financial aid, I may get a tiny portion of Pell (at least that's what the estimate showed). My bigger concern is my daughter's tuition. $3,000 seems so small compared to what her college of choice wants. Not that I have $3,000 sitting around .... Oh, did anyone get the packet of info we're supposed to get after turning in our acceptance letter? Since I slid my letter under the door as instructed and did not have an envelope with me, of course, I am paranoid that they did not get it. I don't want to cancel on the other college I was accepted into until I know GTC has my letter and I get my packet of info.

Lol, I slid mine under the door, mailed it, and emailed Professor Gallogly telling her I did both. And I'm still paranoid they won't get it and something will go wrong. :)

well now I'm paranoid! I think I'll email Dr. --- to make sure they got it :)

Busylife, I should leave you wondering...but I sat next to you in Micro. Yeah the fees and stuff here really isn't all that bad. My BS was from a school that cost 32 thousand (in state) a year! Whew, my parents must have loved me.

I wish they would get on the ball with financial aid, does it always take this long? I was late applying last year, but I feel like they got all the stuff back to me super quick.

Where did you get it/what did you get it in (just curious...I understand if you don't want to put where for the whole www to see ;))? Mine was about the same, but an out of state private college (I don't think they had out of state costs because of being private). I have a BA in German and Religion...has proven to be pretty useless outside of being a conversation starter. *rolls eyes* :banghead: But oh well. Had I been able to get a job with it, I never would have gone into nursing, so it all works out in the end.

Yay, Miss Impatient! I thought that might be you! I'm glad you got in too. And if you can handle the A&PII and Micro at GTC at the same time and work as much as you did and get in, then I am very impressed and expect you to do spectacular in this program!

No, financial aid usually does not take this long. It usually only takes a couple weeks. I filled mine out in February, as always, and they still have not processed it. I called FAFSA last week to see if I should file an update since I may end up having to pay a lot more in medical expenses this year for one of my kids. (Just FYI, that is not something you can report directly on the form, but it's something the school could take into consideration.) Anyway, it was through that phone call that I learned my FAFSA has been "selected for verification," which means I'm being audited, which will delay things more for me. I heard from another friend that she is also going to have to go through verification. I think there are multiple reasons why GTC is behind this year -- conversion to semesters, HOPE scholarship changes, increase in enrollment, and I think the government wants to hold onto their money tighter due to the economy, which means more files selected for verification and the whole process being slowed down.

Olivia, I thought about mailing mine also and also e-mailing to say I sent it in, but I did not want to drive the woman crazy -- especially since I saw her in the hall when I was turning mine in, told her I needed to give her the form, she said put it under the door, and I was like, "Really; you're sure you'll get it?" And she assured me she would, so I thought it would seem untrusting of me if I e-mailed her too. Still may do it, though. :)

As far as degrees we won't use -- I can still use mine, but I think it's actually a diploma -- in court reporting. So I cannot do anything else with it other than court reporting. Well, I guess I could transition into closed captioning and/or realtime transcription for students with disabilities, but I really don't want to sit on my behind preparing transcripts the rest of my life, so it's time for a change. Here's hoping I will like nursing and the medical field as much as I think I will! :)

Mine's actually in Biology. Which I was going to use to teach. But is not useful in and of it's self without something higher. I didn't really want to go into research, so nursing it was.

Yes, BusyLife, the quarter of micro was crazy for me, but I had just gotten back into school. Hopefully now that the household has established a routine (and it seems so much more important when you say nursing classes vs. pre-nursing) things will be a little calmer. I do still plan on working, hopefully fulltime. Are the rest of you going to work? Or do you know if the current class works as well as being a fulltime student?

Specializes in ICU.

I will be working working approximately 24 hours per week while in school and then full time in the summers and on Christmas break. I have friends who are graduating from gtc nursing and they all worked ( at least part time). I have a friend who is finishing her first year and she has worked 36 hr/wk. She said its hard but she is holding her own.

I think our next move is a meeting right? I am sure they are going to wait until after May 15th ( the deadline to reply) and then we will all meet up, at least that is what I remember hearing. Does anyone know?

I know the program does not recommend that anyone works, but I don't know if that's strictly because of course load or if that's because they want you available for whenever clinicals are scheduled or a combination of both. I heard that some are working and some are not. I think it depends on the type of job you hold and any family commitments. All along, I had planned on not working as it's been tough for me to work part-time, take two classes and get A's, and take care of my family. And honestly, when the kids were off for summer and I was in A & P II and spent all that time in the lab, I did not work so that I could concentrate on school and make sure the kids were taken care of (and I spent more time studying than taking care of the kids or house). If I had a low stress job, one that did not require a lot of thinking or deadlines, then I might consider working. However, with my job, I can go in one day and they can be talking about something completely foreign and new and then want me to stay up all night to prepare a transcript. If I end up feeling like I have extra time on my hands (like the first semester since I heard there are no clinicals then -- or at least part of the semester) or feel like putting more stress on myself, then I may work some but probably will ask for the type of cases that I am familiar with. They usually pay less, but there won't be any surprises as far as deadlines and terminology and there would be less stress involved.

I don't know about a meeting, but I would think that would be logical. And I am still overdue for a celebration on getting in! Haven't planned one yet as I've been too busy with school, work, and my daughter's upcoming graduation "stuff."

Miss Impatient,

I'm sorry I did not get back sooner...head in a book and all. I know I spent about $1200.00 for books, shots, background, uniform, scope, and misc. BUT...you can spend less. There are varying degrees of costs for uniforms, depending on the style, same with scopes. Books....you almost have to buy the textbook new, but many of the others you can get used. The Saunder's NCLEX book and the Davis "Success" series are great NCLEX books. If you buy a drug book this quarter...and I do not recall if it is on the list, the Davis Drug Guide for Nurses is very good. You don't need both the book AND the drug cards. Stick with the book 1st. You can always get cards later if you feel you need them.

I hope this helps! Good luck with everything. I know you are excited!!!! We can't wait to meet you all.

oh, uniforms were about 200 total.

Taurus,

I remember the uniforms being about $200.00 too, the main textbook bundle was about $220.00, then there were 3 pharm books, probably between $125 and $150.00 for the 3. They also wanted you to have a Taber's and an NCLEX book. My drug guide/book was about $40.00.

I think the background and drug screen were about $125.00 combined. It was the shots that got me. I know I paid at least $300.00 for everything. The Hep B series was $50.00 a shot times 3 at the health department.

You can get a decent scope for about $65.00, you'll need shoes, too.

Hope the breakdown helps :)

Were those the only books you needed the entire program? How many books were in the main textbook bundle? That doesn't sound bad at all in terms of cost. Well, sounds about right for college textbooks. They're always expensive in terms of books, lol. :) What kind of shoes do they require? Are they non-slip shoes? I had to have those when I worked in a restaurant. Don't have them anymore, but if I remember correctly, they weren't super expensive.
