Gross!!

Ok, so I had a pt who is s/p I&D of the finger. He is continually taking of his bandages and squeezing pus out of the wound. When I told him not to squeeze it, he said the doctor told him to do it. Not believing him, I called the doctor to clarify this. The doctor of course got pi**ed and said that YES, he told him to handle the wound and YES, he told him to "milk" the wound.

Gross gross gross! Besides the fact that the pt is obsessively playing with his nasty finger, this is a huge infection control issue! I gave him a big lecture on handwashing.

YUCK.

i gave the pt a handful of gloves and told him to use them. also told him to use the hand sanitizer liberally. and gave him clean supplies.

guess what???

he came back mrsa+

=2shihtzus;4084257]Thankfully, no....we dont. My charting was pretty detailed too...."Per Dr. Idiot, pt has been instructed to "handle and milk his wound."

Gahhhh!!!!! Now I want to blow chunks all over again!! Think I'll just put this sandwich away until later. . .

Do you all really find that so gross? With all that nurses see, a little pus is nothing.

1- Sounds like that finger needs to go before its the hand that gets infected.

2- Sounds like a failed I&D to me!

3- That's nasty, but also an infection introduction hazard!

agree w/all 3, but 2...something's wrong, that's for sure.

why do dr's totally blow off infection precautions????

Hope you don't have a lot of this doctor's patients in your unit. Could get real nast with everybody squeezing MRSA pus out of their wounds.

can't pinpoint why, but i'm sitting here, making God-awful faces at this dr.:lol2:

betw the infection s/p i&d, then telling pt to milk wound (w/o an official order so it could be done correctly), i'm not feeling too positively towards this doc.

so yeah, having all his pts on the floor...

sounds like w/this guy, anything's a pussibility.:anpom:

i knew i switched to psych for some reason... :D

pus up close isn't bad, it's just an expected part of the job. no biggie, but pus in the abstract is

gross and disgusting and revolting :uhoh3:  ... for me anyway.

that doctor is a jerk!

. . .pphhhfffffffftt. . . . . soda spew!!!!!! :lol2: I did not see that one coming!!! lol

RNperdiem- it wasn't so much the pus as it was the mental image of a guy taking off his dressing, squeezing the pus out with dirty fingers, and then putting the same dressing back on. Over and over again without washing his hands- the OP had to teach him handwashing, which means essentially that he had MRSA pus all over his fingers, so again I say ick.
