GRE scores for direct entry programs

Published

I am about to take the GRE in order to apply to a some direct-entry programs. I am just trying to get a sense of what people have had for scores on this exam when they apply to this type of program. I had a good GPA (3.7), have been involved in psychiatry research for the past two years since undergrad, can count on excellent recs.- but as I study for the GRE, I'm getting very nervous. I know I could do some searching online to get an idea, but thought I would join here to get a little more personal feedback. Thanks!

It will probably vary from DE program to DE program. I am aware of one program that receives 750 applications for 60 spaces and another that receives 300 applications for 60 spaces. The GRE/GPA means for those two programs will differ depending on the competitiveness.

A third factor to consider is whether the institution is a state school or not. If it is a public university, the gpa/gre standards for our-of-state students will likely be higher than for in-state students. This is because there are often state regulations/laws mandating that a certain percentage of the entering class be instate residents. At my University, 2/3 of the undergraduate class must be instate students, and 1/2 of all entering graduate programs must be Virginia residents.

I did so, so poorly on the GRE. I'd already gotten in to a school that didn't require it and decided to accept their offer but since it was too late to cancel my test for money back I thought I'd take it for the heck of it.

Did I mention I did poorly? lol The school that required it only required it if your undergrad GPA was under 3.2. I got a 1080 I think, and opted NOT to have my score sent to the school, just in case I want to go to grad school there in the future!

1080 is not poor!! I consider it average! There is nothing wrong with that. :roll

It was like 40th percentile for math though- I did a lot better for the reading part but it was still something like 70th percentile. I don't remember the score on my essay but it was low also. And I was an English major...

I don't know- it just looked low to me, I didn't realize that was average.

I am not applying to DE programs until next fall, but I just took the GRE two weeks ago. I received 700Q, 600V, and I am still waiting on my writing score. I feel okay with this score and a friend on mine who teaches Kaplan GRE prep said it's a great score, but I am still nervous because the DE programs here in CA have gotten so ridiculously competitive, my score just may be average compared to some of the applicants. I feel like I could have done better with my verbal score, but I won't consider retaking it until I get my writing score back. If I receive anything below a 5, I will retake the test.

I also took the GRE.. Basically for 2 schools. UCSF and Univ of San Diego. I got 690 verbal and 690 math. Happy about verbal, math could have been better. I dont know what the average applicant has but theres one more data point :)
