Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

I just finished my 4th class with GCU. My statistics class just started today. Eeek!!!! So far in every class I have gotten an A without putting too much effort in. The group assignments are outrageous. The class I just had about community health had 2 group projects that were worth 1/2 the grade of the entire class. I find that to be a bit ridiculous. Let me know if I can help you with anything.

Beware, that isn't the last 2 project CLC! ;)

Good luck with stats. I'm glad to have it behind me!

Ohhh man, I was really hoping I wouldn't have to deal with 2 group project classes again. They don't teach you a thing besides you cannot trust other people. Stats sucks, and the teacher doesn't really understand english. I didn't get credit for a question that said the exact same thing as his answers. I had to fight to get my points back. I am keeping all the answers for the assignments.

That's when you talk to your advisor! I had a guy with the initials of SA that came highly recommended. He was really good! After we posted the DQ's he would give HIS answer on the question and had really good Youtube videos.

A friend and I have been pretty lucky. We have had some really good instructors. The one we have for Ethics is good. Our advisors are have some opinions and can offer instructors that come highly recommended. My partner and I waited 2 weeks to get this stats guy.

Group projects stink. I totally agree. It seems to be the popular thing to do. In all fairness, my school twin and I have had some slackers or some that don't write well, but give it their best. Mostly though, we have been lucky to have people that do show up with their projects.

IMO, always be the editor. That way you have control of when the project is turned in and the quality. Yeah, it's a bit more work, but I think in the end it pays off.

I complained to him and was able to get the points back for 1 of the 2 questions. I will have to talk to my adviser about it, because he is not up to par. I have a 4.0 going into this class and I intend on keeping it. I am always the one to submit my groups projects, and I always do a big portion of editing even if I wasn't the one that signed up for it. I have had teachers that have yelled at other members in my groups for not participating and having a poor attitude towards group work saying that everyone else should pick up their slack since it is a group. I think my stats teacher is EM.

How do you know they yell at people? In all the groups we have been in, we never had our instructor 'yell' at anyone. Our last one had a group member that would breeze in and out. We emailed our concerns (this was for research) to our instructor, who told us to NOT do her work. She did mention that not all of us would not receive the same grade, or something of that nature. My twin and I took that as the instructor was going to dock this person for not being part of the group.

Thankfully, the slacker did show up with her part (done halfway incorrect), so we fixed it and moved on. My twin and I got full points. I have no idea what slacker got.

As I mentioned, we have pretty good instructors. Just like any b/m schools, you do get your few crazy ones, but so far so good for twin and I. We are wrapping up ethics with an instructor name of JC. She is very good. Just make sure you get your APA correct!!

The instructor called her out in the groups forum. Research is my next class and then I go to Ethics. I was originally told I didn't have to take Ethics because I already took one, but they said I still needed 3 more credits. I can't wait to be done.

I'm reading my quoted post up above. I should never type with a kid poking me and repeatedly calling "mom." :wacky:

IMO, I think it's cool the instructor did call them out! I wish some of the slackers I had in the past would have been publically shamed!:roflmao:

Ethics is ok. Research is freaking dry..I learned a lot, but the papers were painful. Research is where you develop your PICO for your capstone. It kind of makes it feel that graduation is around the corner.

Flames9_RN,

Interesting as in there was quite a bit of inconsistency throughout the entire course. Grading was very generic, in fact some of the people that I talked to received the same exact comments as I did for their APA papers and such. I felt that I was constantly fighting for points that I had earned. All in all, I think the online environment takes some getting used to. And I strongly DISLIKE group projects. No fun at all! I would much rather be responsible for my own work and not depend on a group of people with different work ethics to complete the assignment. I hope that your 1st class is going well for you. :)

I do think as in any b/m classroom, their are different instructors both good, bad and in-between. A friend and I compared comments and some were the same and others were not.. I'm sure I would be pretty generic in my comments to a point. Some of the instructors I have, read and respond to your paper, word for freaking word. I would almost prefer generic comments.

Group projects are in both b/m and online and I agree, they suck! Pandora and I are twins and we both usually sign up for the editing. It sucks but neither one of us want to depend on someone who might not edit as thoroughly. A friend an in state b/m school is having huge issues with her group. So it's just not us, lol.

The good news is, you don't have a group project in stats or spirituality.

The prof for this 1st course, put down valuable comments on our APA papers. She was an extremely easy marker.

I noticed too, that the first class instructor was more lenient. They seem to up the game though starting with research. Our ethics instructor was a stickler for APA...omg.
