Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Hi, everyone. I read some comments on this forum regarding certain states no longer recognizing the BSN from GCU's RN to BSN program, specifically the state of Washington. However, I contacted the Washington Board of Nursing and asked about the RN to BSN program and they told me that they do accept/recognize the RN to BSN from GCU in their state and if I live in another state, as long as the program is accepted in my home state and I have a license, they will recognize it. I contacted GCU directly and they were also unaware of any states not recognizing their RN to BSN program. Does anybody have any updated/further information on this? It sounded like both the Washington Board of Nursing and GCU had not heard of this issue. Thank you in advance.

Im sorry.....but i have never heard of this. Let me know what you find out.

Are you planning on starting the program at all? if so when? what are your driving forces behind your decision to start?

thanks!

There was some talk of this earlier in this thread. I just wanted to get some input from others who may have some new information on this. I will let you know if I find out anything else. Hopefully, someone will comment here. I do plan on starting this program as long as the Higher Learning Commission accepts GCU's proposal to convert back to a non-profit (there may be a decision on this sometime near the end of February). If this happens, I'd like to start in the summer. The driving force behind my decision is that the hospitals where I live prefer to higher BSN-prepared nurses. They will hire ADN nurses, but you have to sign a contract stating you'll have a BSN within three years. Additionally, I'd like to eventually become an NP.

Capella has a program that is a bit different. With the flex plan, there are no discussion boards, only papers and power point and you go at your own pace. My girlfriend and I started at the same time and she finished before more at Capella as my classes had a lot more work with the weakly discussion questions and required responses. And as far as Stats I had to get a local college professor to tutor me, which cost me a lot of money. The class was extremely difficult and many students in the class were taking it for the second time. I would not have passed without the tutor. I almost dropped out d/t that class but with a lot money and help I passed with a very high grade. My girlfriend did not have to take statisitcs at Capella and her Capstone was 4 papers and a power point, no mentor or required hours.

OMG! i did not know this at all. this even though this institution is for-profit, the price for the RN-BSN online program does not seem that bad, as other for profit institutions.

I am definitely going to email my GCU advisor and inquire more about this, as you have definitely peaked my interest in this topic.

I will let you know what i find out as well!

You're right about the price. It isn't bad at all. I'll also receive a hefty discount for military affiliation, which makes their program even more enticing. If they convert to a non-profit soon, I may even begin classes before Summer starts. I know several former classmates, as well as colleagues, who've completed GCU's RN to BSN program and they've all had mostly good things to say. If you do decide on this program, when do you plan to start?

Hello there! I did question my GCU admission rep about this, and he replied, GCU is moving forward with converting back to a non for-profit institution but this will have no effect on current or future students.

I booked marked this thread, so i come back here frequently to see any new post, especially new post from current students, writing about their current experience in the program. Flames9_RN has been an awesome help. Very encouraging!

I plan on starting this program April 2018. Good luck to you.

Thank you for letting me know! He is right, it shouldn't have any effect whether it is non-profit it or not. It's just a personal thing for me. The majority of people seem to like it. Who knows, maybe we'll be classmates!

Thank god for this thread! I just finished my last class and will be starting the capstone in 1 week. Can someone please pm me with who you do and do not recommend. From what I read the capstone instructor can really make or break you! any advice would be greatly appreciated!

How did you like the program? would you recommend it? any advice or suggestions? thank you!

Overall the program was good and the majority of my instructors were great. All but 2 or 3 classes have a group project that can be a pain if you have lazy people but most programs have group projects. The program is a little expensive but got a nice discount because I was military. My only real complaint is they changed the capstone halfway though the classes and now require a mentor and a non-affiliation agreement which makes no sense. Besides that, yes I would recommend the program. Some people take 2 classes at a time which if you work full time and have a family would be very hard. Let me know if you decide to do it and I can give you some pointers.

starting intro to nursing research next week, none of the instructors that were recommended to me are teaching it at this time. Looking for any more that perhaps haven't been suggested.

If you have the name of an instructor, you can always E-mail that instructor and ask when their next class will start. I did that several times, especially with the stats class. You never know, the instructor you want, maybe starting a new class in the following week. I had instructors tell me up to 3 classes out. You can change some class around with the exception of stats and research. If memory serves me correct, you have to take stats than research!
