Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Hello all I am new to this. After reading this post and many others I think for sure I will be enrolling to GCU. I am not the sharpest tool in the box and work slower than others. I was wondering if ANYONE could tell me which instructors to avoid, and which instructors are AWESOME in the RN to BSN program. Any suggestions would help. Thanks in advance!

Hey Beauty,

Welcome to the group! We are not allowed to post instructor names where they are visible. I do have the say, there are some tough ones, but that isn't always a bad thing. ;) I only had two that I would have avoided if at all possible. Well..one I did. The other I had no clue about, and I suffered for 5 weeks, taking 10-15 point hits on papers.

What you can do is get on the classroom site on Friday after it loads. Classes start on a Monday, so this gives you plenty of time to cruise through the classroom. If you see any announcements that are alarming, such as "Any paper with APA mistakes will be returned to you with a 0% and if corrected, the returned paper will have an automatic deduction of 20%". (Yes, this really was an announcement and yes, I ran for my life). Soooo...if you see something like that and you are not so sure about your APA and feel the hair on the back of your neck rise, then do NOT post. Call your advisor and get out ASAP. ;) Just a tip that worked well for a few of us.

@tokmom, Thank you so much for your in put. I did not know there was a rule about posting instructors names on here, wow thats crazy. I am so worried and scared though because I had such a hard time in nursing school and the thought of writing so many papers is a little overwhelming. I HATE writing papers because it takes me FOREVER just to come up with the introduction and to even write about something in length. Papers have never been my forte in general. I do not have the gift of "gab" lol if thats how the saying goes. But I read this entire post and others and for the most part everyone seems to like GCU so maybe I can be successful there.

If this makes you feel any better, I hadn't been to school for well over 20 years, did not know how to operate MS Word, or power points and thought APA was a kind of motor oil. Now, I can whip out a power point in a day (in rough, but doable form) and get the skeleton of a paper completed. Believe me, you become proficient very quickly.

Tips:

Know APA 6th edition. If you don't. start boning up on Owl Purdue or the APA website

Stats? Get familiar with the lingo

Work ahead if you can. Yes, you will have no social life until you can get into a routine and even then it will be limited if you are a slow writer, but it is doable. You just have to have the commitment and the desire to see it through.

@tokmom you are truly a God sent. I really do appreciate your tips and you answering the questions I have. This site is awesome! I wish you the best of luck in your journey and pray that more people can be just as helpful as you.

Gee, thanks! I just remember not having a lot of information when I first started and it was rather scary. A few people wandered through to answer my questions, but not quickly enough for my liking. :) I thought I could help people with tips and tricks and help everyone be successful.

@tokmom, you and your twin should be on your way to graduating right now correct? That must be so exciting! I was once again up late reading the other thread on GCU with all you guys comments. I have been obsessed! :woot: I actually came across the administration post saying not to post instructors names on the thread but you can by PM. I figured out where the PM are and realized I can't even get any yet because I need 15 post. I want to get PM's like others of that GOLDEN list of instructors, its allowed. LOL:yes: Oh let me not forget HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all of you BEAUTIFUL Mothers out there, may you all be blessed with many more!

I do believe it's considered slander if you put names and crazy comments behind it. :yeah:

I honestly have no clue on who the 'bad' instructors are minus just the one, but that class is in the middle of the program so no immediate worries for you. My best advice is what I had mentioned earlier. The classroom is usually loaded (haven't seen it otherwise) on Friday and make sure you get into the announcements and read them all, which if the instructor has them preloaded, you can. As I said before if their list is a mile long of things they expect, it may not be a good fit. So check out the instructor first.

Secondly, these instructors teach multiple classes such as capstone and research, so you have to be on your toes to avoid them throughout the course. I think overall we have had some pretty darn good ones. I know Pandora and I did, and we took whomever came down the pike except for stats, but we had to sit out for 2 weeks to get them.

In fact the capstone professor we asked for, we did not get, because she did not teach this time around, so we were placed in a random person's class, whom we knew nothing of, but after sitting out two weeks waiting for the person that never arrived, we bit the bullet and kept her. Well, long story short. I was placed in other classroom with an instructor that I heard had high marks. I went into the classroom on Thursday (loaded early because of Easter holiday)and looked around. She did not appear difficult. No horrible rules, however, she was vague on the details of the capstone. The capstone is confusing enough without being vague!:nailbiting:.. Yet, Pandora's professor had everything spelled out with tons of details. Even though both seemed fair, Pandora's prof teaches the way I need to learn, so I switched. :)

@tokmom, to be honest I think I would rather have a few tests instead of so many papers though. lol Like for real is it really necessary for one to write a paper every week in APA format. :banghead: I guess it comes which the territory though.

Yes, it comes with the territory and some weeks there are two papers. Don't let it scare you though.

Personally, I would rather have papers than a test, lol.
