Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Thi smay sound like I'm cruel, but I'm not,lol Death does not overly phaze me, I accept that it is a part of life. Don't get me wrong, I have shed a lot of tears over loosing loved ones, and it breaks my heart seeing the poor suffer here in Nicaragua. But I rather spend time with patients and ensuring they are well looked after near the end of their life. Each their own, and thats what is great about nursing--so many different work environments

Death doesn't phase me either. Lord knows I was 18 when I started in the healthcare field and have seen plenty of dying people and held their hands while they passed. I have prided myself on my end of life care and have had families actually come up to me months later in a grocery store and give me hugs again, for what I did.

However, I was *the* poster child for compassion fatigue and burnout and left the profession for close to 5 year because I hated this profession. I can thank management at a former facility and my own need to care for others as the catalyst.

Now I'm back as a primary breadwinner, so I need to stay emotionally healthy in order to survive in the nursing world.

Thankfully, I'm smart enough to know where I can and cannot venture in nursing. What I am hoping for is our hospital taking on hospice program in-house. I would have the best of both worlds. The healthy knees and hips that go home and the dying that I can give comfort too in small doses and pull away from when I have to.

Hospice needs people like you that can keep your emotional distance, yet offer care.

Yeah, the pay cut into community health sucks, but I'm also not the primary breadwinner in my household, my husband is. I wouldn't do it right away, need to pay off our student loans before I decide that! After those are paid then I could think more along those lines. I'd also like to try my hand at L&D still. That's the only hospital nursing I enjoyed in school.

I have always wanted to do labor and delivery, but only ventured into mother/baby. The liability of L/D scares me, lol.

I love working in the hospital. I don't always love the hours we have, but I can't imagine leaving the NICU. I am so happy in the NICU

Money is nice, esp when I was PRN and getting time and a half plus shift differential! But finding a job where you look forward to going to work is much more valuable. And a job that isn't phoning you every night as they are short, lol

I just found this board, yeah! I am currently in NRS434V. I am getting ready for Public Health and they gave me some instructor names. Kathy Karlberg, Sheila Hicks, Colleen Darrow, and Rhonda Johnston. If you had a choice which instructor would you go with? I still have a few pages to read but learning lots here!

Has anyone ever had a day that felt totally non productive? I swear, all I have done is edit and not complete anything today. I hate that feeling, especially with multiple papers due on Sunday. ACK! :woot:

I hope your night gets better. I have had those days.... Right now I am going back and forth on what the stupid diabetes paper and powerpoint are really asking of me. I asked the teacher for clarification, and she made me slightly more confused.

Thank you for your responses, says I need to have 15 posts before I can use PM. I too spent the day tweaking a paper that isn't even at the tweaking point. Grrr. Work the next two so maybe a shorter deadline will produce better results! Ha! I'm working on the adolescent health assessment. Is it as straightforward as it seems, just fill in the blanks and add the nursing diagnosis with rationale. Seems like I'm missing something!
