Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Back from holiday in the U.S. and trying to get in the groove again. Struggling to read the assigned reading a bit as jet lag has been taking more time to go away than it has previously. *then again, I wonder if it is the subject...leadership and management.... *yawn*

Flames - excellent overview!!!

OK, decided if reading was putting me to sleep it was for another day. :) Got my first DQ completed and posted. Woke up this morning and had hoped to be able to get rocking on my responses. Only two other people had posted besides me. Guess I have one set of responses, but until the crickets stop chirping I am directed to finishing my DQ2 for the week.

Bright side......no CLC in this class!! Yea!!!!!!

Not like I don't have other things I should be doing as well....RNC is due end of September and start to get my stuff in order to apply for Masters program. Gotta love when ADD works to your advantage. LOL

I had decided to 'bite the bullet' and attend GCU. The representative told me I have 11 classes (bachelors degree statistics is already done). I was told that by two representatives based on the 140 units/classes I already have completed. I just logged into my GCU acct and see that I am enrolled for an astonishing 15 classes. The additional 4 seem to be unnecessary filler classes. Has this happened to anyone else??? I am very upset.

That is NUTS. I wouldn't touch a thing until you have something guaranteed in writing (from the transcript review people) exactly WHICH of your classes transfer/qualify, and then which ones don't meet the criteria (and why), and how many credits short you are of the 120 total required for the degree (which you shouldn't be short at all - my ADN was >20 years ago and I only had to take the usual 12). Are your private-pay or financial aid/loan? Not that it makes a difference, but if you're private pay I'd tell them you'd be happy to take your cash to UofP or WGU if somebody doesn't start `splainin'. A total of 15 classes is an extra $7,200.00-ish (@ approx $1800/class x4) above the 11 you were quoted.

Don't touch anything in the student portal or LC, let them get it straightened out FIRST. Classes literally start every single Monday of the year, I would not start on the promise that they will fix it and then mysteriously it doesn't happen.

How old is your ADN? Honestly I never understood why anyone needs more than the 12 core classes, but several folks here on the thread have had to take 1 or 2 extra (not 4!)

Flames, why did you have to take 2 more?

PrismRN: I graduated May 2014 with about 140 units. In addition, I completed a 300 level statistics class at CalState. All of the classes that I took went towards the BSN pathway. I have NO idea where they would think I need additional classes. I was told that because I had the upper level stats class that only 11 would be needed. I think I have read several threads where people that had stats took only 11 (or if they had more classes that could count even less).

I am using a combo of: the rest of my FASFA, loan and private pay. I am already accepted into another college but was preferring to complete GCU with a friend or two. I won't take any class until this is figured out

Has anyone told you who to take the capstone with? If they have, I'll refrain from repeating. :)

Yes, thanks Tokmom, I know the recommended instructors. At this point, I just want to be done and will settle for an ok instructor. I just don't want one that I "should avoid at all costs". :nailbiting:

Top choice is Frontier Nursing University in Kentucky. Going for Women's Health NP. If our assignment isn't completed by the time I need to do clinicals I plan to pack up as much as possible and head back to the US. Presently it is looking like we will be heading back around the time I would start to do clinical work.

Many of my staff have asked me if I was going to do management... I just ask them if they see me in management. There is always a chuckle, and they tell me they think I would be good, but then again I stand up for my girls and speak my mind, so may not be the best option. :roflmao:

ok... Only y'all will truly appreciate this! Go into my forum to check on responses to DQ, as a new day is about to start soon. What do I see???......... Someone responded to a DQ with the original posters post - word for word. I am hoping it is an error that they meant to quote. Time will tell.........

As mentioned, I did not have to take Ethics and community health, so at 1st I was told I only had to take 10 classes..sweet. Then they told me I needed 12...to have the min # of credits one needs to obtain their BSN....thus I took 2 "anything" classes...still nursing related and had to be approved. ( I took HLT 317 and AMP 450)

But yes, listen to Prism, and find out exactly what is going on before u start!!
