Grady Hospital - volunteering??

Published

Not sure where exactly to put this post... does anyone here volunteer/has volunteered/work at Grady in Atlanta? I'm curious to hear about what this hospital is like from that perspective, because I've only been to the ER once, and it was as a patient. I'm considering applying to volunteer while I work on my BSN at Georgia State.

Hi - I've been volunteering in the ER at Grady since last year and it's been a great experience. You mainly stay in the triage area and the duties consist of cleaning stretchers, transporting patients from the triage area to one of the treatment zones, restocking supplies, getting blankets/pillows for patients, and anything else needed by the staff. You will see a lot and it gives you great insight to a level I trauma center. If you get the opportunity, I would highly recommend it.

That sounds excellent and exactly what I'm looking for! How was the application process, and how quickly did they get back to you? I looked over the application and handbook, but I've never met anyone else who has worked there, so I'm incredibly curious. I also work full-time as a bartender, so I'm not sure when I'd be available; is scheduling flexible?

The application process was easy and they got back with me pretty quickly. Unless something has changed since I applied, once you apply they will set up an interview with the volunteer office and at the interview they will schedule you for the next orientation. I was lucky and happen to be in her office when someone called to reschedule their orientation so I was able to get in on that one the following week and I was in the ER that weekend. She will also ask you to pick a day and time that you can volunteer. They ask that you commit to at least 3 hours a week for 3 months. The time it takes to start will also depend on how quickly you can get your medical documentation to them and background check done. I was already in nursing school when I applied, so all my medical vaccines, etc. were already done and I had the documents with me at the interview, which was helpful.

Like I said before, I've really enjoyed it and the staff is great in the ER. Just like anything else, it is what you make of it and if you take it as a learning experience you will get a lot out of it. Sometimes you see things that will stick out and will actually help in school.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I start my orientation on july 21st for volunteering i will be in the lactation department. It was a quick process they let you choose your hours. You can probably join the orientation on the 21st i dont know if they have a limit of how many people can be in orientation at one time. I also go to ga state im applying for spring 2012. Hope to see you at grady GOOD LUCK!

Can you choose your department?

I sent my application in today, so hopefully my references will respond quickly and I'll get in soon! They asked for my top 3 choices for placement, which are mother/baby, ICU, and Cancer. I guess whatever is available on Mondays. What medical documentation is needed? I want to get ahead of the game!

you can pick from whats available. you need shot records(i think they are looking for 2 mmr shots) and proof that you had chicken pox( actually i just gave her the year that i had it).

Specializes in LTC/Rehab.

I had got stuck in Guest Services. The staff was cool, but I would have rather been around more nurses like in the ER. I didn't get to see much as a volunteer in Guest Services.

Did they not go by your top three choices? Also, what was the refrence form like and how long did it take for them to send it? Because my refrences says they have yet to receive anything?

Ok I have an interview to volunteer. Can anyone tell me what to expect at the interview?

I got an email to call for an interview, but I can't do this for about two weeks. Do you think it's ok to wait until then to call and schedule one?
