Hello PA,
God willing I will graduate this may and pass the NCLEX! With that being said there is a strong possibility that I will move to pittsburgh because its still close to home and its far enough away for me to be independent. I've heard great things about UPMC but I've heard there is also alot of hospitals to choose from. Would anyone out there know what the pay rate would be for a rn starting out, apt ments, lofts etc (i'm 22 if that helps:)) . just any general info about pittsburgh will be greatly apperciated.:) Merry christmas & happy new year to all:christmastree:

Starting salary for new GN/RN's is low $20's/hr. I would encourage you to apply early, especially if you want to work a speciality like ER, peds, or ICU. Good luck, I love the 'burgh!

I love the 'burgh also. I have lived here most of my life. As far as salaries go I think in the low 20's/hr is standard. Cost of living isn't terrible. If you live in most suburbs expect to pay $800+ for a 1-2 bedroom apartment. You can find them cheaper farther away from the city or in the country. I live north of the city and it is growing like crazy up here. Most opportunities in the city are with UPMC or West Penn. UPMC has salary info on their website. Good luck with your decision to more to western PA!
U said I need to apply early gotcha. But I'm concerned about applying because I've haven't graduated yet and I really don't have a resume full of outstanding credentials, my resume would read something like this. " Hello I've never worked in a hospital but hire me:) any advice? thank for da previous feedback
Don't worry about not having any hospital experience. I just got hired as an OB Tech at AGH with no previous healthcare experience and not even in nursing school yet. I am pre-nursing and have worked in and out of restaurants and offices for over 10 years. I highlighted on my resume what would make me a good candidate for the position and made sure when I went to my interview they knew my long term passion for Labor & Delivery nursing. Everyone was really great.
When you apply just make sure the good stuff stands out enough for them to look twice and let your references and personality speak for the rest. Good Luck!
Well regardless of whether you come to PGH or not, you are going to have no job experience. Most hospitals in PGH are very willing to hire and train new grads, some even have new grad residency programs. I say apply early because I work at Children's. I applied in Dec/Jan, got hired and didn't stared until after I graduated nursing school in the summer. Just show a manager that you have a good work ethic and a willingness to learn, and you shouldn't have a problem getting hired somewhere in the city.

UPMC and West Penn are big organizations. There are some private hospitals in the south hills like St. Clair and Jefferson Regional. Salaries there are slightly higher. These are nonteaching insititutions whereas the others are.
