graduated almost 5 years ago...no practice

Published

I graduated from my BSN last October 2005. Since graduation I have not practiced because I have not been successful enough to obtain a license. I really want to pursue my nursing career, any tips on how I can get back into the reviewing mode? I know I may sound lame but I would really appreciate tips from you guys :specs: thanks!

I think the board of nurses has a review course that you can take. I'm not sure. Double check with your state's BNE. Good luck!!

I am interpretting this, also, that you have not passed the NCLEX? As far as that goes, I know it is quite a bit of money, but I took the Kaplan course, and I think it is why I had no trouble passing the first time. It is costly, but when you consider that it will cost you an additional $200+ to take the test over again, (I don't know what it costs to take the test now), having the Kaplan experience really was a no-brainer for me. Prior to my nursing degree, I had been a CNA so long, that during nursing school, I really had trouble making the switch from just collecting observations about patient's towards making critical thinking decisions that impacted their care. I think I really didn't "get it", until I took the Kaplan course, and had been working in a graduate nursing job for a while.

Also, as was said, determining where you can take a refresher course may also be an option. Best wishes!

How many times have you taken the NCLEX exam? What were you failing in? The report should give areas that you were above or below the passing standard. You need to focus your study on areas that were weakest. At this point, after so long out, a comprehensive review course is probably a great idea. Get a book (eg. Saunders) and start doing questions and looking at the rationale for the answers (both right and wrong). Learn how to read an NCLEX question and what answer they are asking for.

You might want to consider taking a review course to get yourself in the study mode for the NCLEX.
