Graduate Nurse License????

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm from New Jersey and have accepted a position in DE. I am being asked to produce a GN license on the first day of orientation. I've checked the board of nursing site and there is no such license or a listing of GN's. I have my diploma, ATT and date that I'm testing for the nclex. I figured this info will verify that I'm am a GN. Has anyone else had this sort of problem??

There is no license per se, but they may be asking for an interim permit of some type. And this is what they will want to see. Of the states that still permit GNs to work in that role, there is usually a document that is produced and that is what they are wanting to see.

Just check with your BON for the state where you will be working.

And are you testing for NJ or for DE?

And did you apply for the interim permit when you applied to DE? That usually requires a separate application as well as separate payment for that, not sure what this state does about it.

I origianally signed up to test for a NJ license but got hired in DE...so I'll have to pay add'l to receive a DE license as well. Do you think my ATT and diploma are sufficient to show that I am indeed a GN? Other states do offer GN licenses but Jersey's BON website does not offer anything in the form of license to GN's.

I do not think there is any such thing as G.N. license anymore. Most ,if not all states, have switched to nclex on computer, which can be taken alot sooner than years past. When i graduated, in 1990, i worked on the floor as a Nurse with my G.N. license for about 6 months before the next nclex was offered, which was only 2 times /yr..I would check with your Nurses Assoc in your state regarding that.

I know for us here in TX or ATT is what makes us GVN status. Employers were able to verify online at Nursey.com (I believe that is correct) That we do have our ATT, which is our permit to work. Good for 90 days or until we take our NCLEX.

I also live in NJ, however i work in Pennsylvania. When I first went for my job interview, I was asked to provide a Graduate Nurse License, which I had no clue what it was. They gave me information on how to go about applying for one. Basically you have to provide the BON with proof that you graduated fron an accredited nursing school and I believe that you also have to provide them with proof that you are eligible to take the nclex, and for a fee (i believe it was $30 or so) they provide you with a temporary "license". Once you pass the boards, it becomes null and void and you get your real license that you can practice under. I think that it was only good for about 90 days or so, and then you either had to take the nclex or shell out more money to have it extended. My situation was a little unique because i took the boards in NJ and then had to apply to PA for endorsement, so I was working under my GN license in PA even though I was an RN in NJ while waiting for my paperwork to go through.

Maybe it's the same in Delaware?

Hope that helped!

First of all, you need to have a DE license to be able to begin work there, that you registered with your home state is not acceptable for any other state.

You have applied for licensure in NJ, but that has nothing to do with licensure in DE, and that is something that you are going to need to have before you can even begin orientation. I am surprised that you were not informed of this beforehand, but there is going to be no way for you to begin to work if you have not even applied to DE as of yet. It makes no difference as to what NJ does, you are not going to be working there. Your concern is what the requirements are for DE since that is where you are going to be working. Having a license in NJ is not valid for DE, and not sure why you did not go with DE directly since you are not planning to work in NJ.

You need to speak to the facility first thing on Monday morning and let them know what is going on. What you have from NJ is not accepted for DE as it is another state.

You need to check out the website for the DE BON as soon as possible to see what you are going to need to do. Not sure when you are to start orientation, but you are going to need something from the DE BON to be able to start.

I am in Florida and the BON here sends a letter stating that you have received GN status until whatever date they listed as the deadline. Before you can work in another state as a GN you have to apply and be approved through that states BON. I would contact the BON there asap on Monday and try to expedite the process. Here in Florida, they have 30 days from the date they receive the application to process it. Good luck!

RI still has GN licenses-you have to apply for it as soon as you finish school-it's temporary(90 days) and if you take the NCLEX and fail, they revoke it. You cannot work as a GN until you have this temporary license.

To work as a GN in DE, you need to apply for a GN permit from the BON. The BON verifies your transcript from school and usually you receive it in the mail within 1-2 weeks. As a NJ resident, you would probably need to call the BON and have them send you the information. It is illegal to work in a GN capacity without this permit, and most companies will not even allow you to go into orientation without it.

Thanks for providing the information for Delaware.

This is why my first rule of nursing is never to assume anything. If not sure, then always ask. Just hope that this will not be too late for you, not sure when you are going to start orientation but you must have the documentation from DE to be able to begin.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the valuable information that has been provided. I just wish that I was told what was needed when I was hired. There is another orientation that I can attend at a later date, so I won't lose out on this position. I will contact DE BON Monday for info and find what is required. I truly appreciate the time all of you took to answer my questions.
