Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management

World International

Published

Hi everyone, I'm a registered nurse in the Philippines. I'm about to apply for a student visa and enroll in an international college in UK and take GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT.

After I passed June 2007 NLE, I had hard time applying in hospitals. I ended up volunteering in a 250 bed Government Hospital. After my contract, I decided not to renew anymore since there was no chance for me to be hired as a regular staff (there were too many volunteers lined up for the position). I applied again to other hospitals but to no avail. Since Philippines is overflowing with nurses, I decided to try getting a student visa. Even though I'll only be receiving £6-10/hr as a student, I think it will be better than staying here and letting time fly by and have no work/progress at all. I'll be sponsored by my brother who works as a private carer and I'm also gonna stay in their flat with his wife (RN in UK).

:confused: I hope someone could enlighten be about Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management.

Can you provide a bit more information on the course?

I got this from the school's website:

The Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management is a collaborative effort of Business, Public Administration, Nursing and Social Work to meet the growing need for advanced professional development and education in healthcare administration. It is designed for:

  • Professionals with a public or business administration background who wish to prepare for leadership positions in healthcare management and administration
  • Professionals working in the healthcare field such as doctors, nurses, social workers and allied health professionals who seek advanced knowledge and skills in healthcare administration.

If your planning on staying in the UK after completing the course I am not sure this will allow you to. How long is the course?

I seriously doubt this will allow you to stay and work in the UK once you have completed it, not sure what your plans are but things are very hard in the UK at the moment on finding employers willing to help with work permit if not from UK or EU

It's fine if it won't allow me.. but better if it will. I know things are very hard in the UK (I have read other posts) but I'm willing to grab even the tiniest bit of chance I can get

There is freeze in hiring in UK, retrogression in US, safety issues in middle east, overflowing of nurses in my country. I've got nowhere else to go. Applying student visa is all I can think of right now. BTW, what is the probability of acquiring one?

That additional training will not help in any way for you to get a job as you will have the BSN already under your belt. This program does not help you in any way at all, but actually lessens your chances at getting work afterwards as you will be away from the RN role for minimum of a year, we have seen this program or ones similar last for three years. And it does nothing to help you at all.

Much has already been written on this type of program under the UK forum, recommend that you just a have a search for the other threads.

Can I ask how you will be earning £6 an hour whilst doing this course, what university will you be studying with? Have you looked at the course fees, could you provide a link to the university you will be studying in?

I work with management trainees from a course such as this but I have a few further questions for you.

There are a few things about your post that concern me, if you could provide a few more details maybe I can answer your questions a little more fully.

Not noticed that, As a student you shouldn't be working unless you are given permission also you are limited to how many hours you can do and not allowed overtime unless it is during the holidays. Actually looks like things have changed as a student and this is what I have found be able to pay for your course and support and accommodate yourself and any dependants without working or help from public funds;

Thank you Silverdragon102 and suzanne4..

Actually, I've been away from the RN role for 3 1/2 months and it's getting hard everyday. I've come to think that choosing BSN degree was a huge mistake. I'm having sleepless nights thinking what will happen to my career.

Sharrie, a friend of mine just told me about all of this stuff. She already applied and has her visa. There's no workplacement for that course. I don't know if the thing she said about earning from OJT's is true.

The college looks like a good one but it is based in London by the looks of it, this is the most expensive place in the UK to live, also if you look at Silverdragons link you have to provide evidence that you are able to pay all of the course fees (which will not be cheap) and also support yourself without working for the duration of the course.

You must not:

  • take employment in the United Kingdom;
  • engage in business, produce goods or provide services within the United Kingdom, including selling goods or services direct to members of the public;
  • study at a government-funded school;
  • be a child under the age of 18;
  • undertake part-time (up to 20 hours), or full-time vacation employment;
  • undertake a work placement or internship (paid or unpaid) as part of your course of study; or
  • extend your stay in the United Kingdom.

If you get a student visa and intend on working then you will be breaking the law and subject to being sent home without completing your study.

Unless you have the finances to support yourself for that year I really do think that you will be unable to do this course.
