Hello all,
I am conducting research for my ADN program. The focus of my research is the grading scales other ADN programs are using. I would greatly appreciate your help on this project. All I need is for you to provide the name of your school along with the grading scale used in your program. If plus or minus are used (i.e. A+, A-) then please include that information. Thank you very much for your time and support.
-Fellow ADN student.
Hello NiftyGirl2014,
Your program's grading scale also seems very intense. I am wondering how often students get A's in your program? I hope that you can answer the poll question I have added to the thread. Most of the grades I have gotten in my program would have landed me straight C's in yours. That means that I would graduate with a 2.0 and would have to apply to graduate programs with that GPA. Once again thank you for your help and I wish you the best of luck in the future!
Apples&Oranges,
I am sorry to hear that you lost so many colleagues! I remember losing a couple of good friends my first semester as well. Some of them came back for a second attempt and still failed. You have to be a nursing student or have been one in order to understand how difficult it really can be! I wish you the best of luck and hope that you don't lose anymore people.
Hello augurey,Wow! My hat is off to you my friend for going through such a fierce program. I hope that you have been able to attain the grades you deserve. In my program a 78% is a C so it is still on the higher side but not compared to yours by any means. Now, since your grading scale seems to be one of the highest would you mind answering these questions as well for me?
Do you plan to further your education & if so what is your ultimate career goal?
Do you feel that the grading scale your institution has implemented has helped or hindered this goal of yours?
Once again thank you for sharing and keep good luck!
Once I pass the NCLEX, I plan on finding a job, getting my feet back on the ground (I quit my job to do this) and then go back to further my education within a couple of years. Since I'm still really early into starting my program, I'm still not 100% sure where I'm going from here (nursing wise). I have some ideas of specialties or paths, but I feel like those will fall into place during my education and after.
At first I found the grading scale a little scary and daunting, but the truth is I appreciate it. It could hinder my future goals, but I also think it's absolutely worth it. So far, it has made me work harder for it.
I hear some complaints about the grading scale, but I feel like it's just holding us to a higher standard (they actually increased their standards for admittance for our class). Considering we have to pass the NCLEX and will ultimately have people's lives in our hands, I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. I'm not saying that those with a lower grading scale aren't holding students to a high standard, but I feel like my institution's grading scale is going to make me or break me. I feel like their grading scale will be more beneficial for me than if they had a lower one.
I'm in an ABSN and the program grading criteria is:
A = 4.0 = 100-94
A- = 3.7 = 93-90
B+ = 3.3 = 89-87
B = 3.0 = 86-83
B- = 2.7 = 82-80
C+ = 2.3 = 79-78 (minimum passing grade)
I'm planning to go for NP in a couple of years after working as a RN. I'm very happy for the grading scale because I think it will help me to be competitive for NP school.
Hello all! Thank you very much for your input. I am compiling the data that you have all provided. I still have some time to put the project together so I hope to hear from more student nurses! I wish you all the best and I hope that the information everyone is sharing puts things into perspective :)
I will be starting an LVN program at my school, but the ADN and LVN programs have the same grading scale..
A= 90-100
B= 80-89
C= 75-79
Anything below a 75 is failing and grades are not rounded up. If you have a 74.9 you have failed and therefore cannot continue in the program
My schools grading scale:
A 93-100
A- 90-92
B+ 87-89
B 83-86
B- 80-82
I was in a ASN program. During my time in school (graduated in May 2013) anything lower than an 80 was failing. No rounding ever..a 79.99999 was fail. They have since increased the minimum grade to an 83 and again, no rounding...ever.
I am currently 1/2 way through my RN to BSN program. It is the same school and the grade scale is the same, however the BSN courses require a minimum of an 80 to be considered passing the course.
I have no plans on going past my BSN. Of course, that remains to be seen :)

Hello SopranoKris,
First of, congrats on your acceptance! I think it is great that you are driven and are thinking past the BSN. Nurses like you will definetely change the field of nursing.
once again thank you.
