Hi!
I am a nursing I student who had failed the course by 1 point. As of Fall 2010 the passing rate is 77% (previously it was 75%). Obviously, I am at a 76%, I would have passed the course if I had gotten 2 more points on my final exam. (Those 2 points would give me a 76.5% which would be rounded up to a 77%) I filed a grade appeal because the nursing program does not allow us to review the final exam after it is graded and I strongly believe I should have gotten a higher grade on my final. After looking through my required text book for the course I noticed that some of the questions on the exam could have multiple answers (I counted at least 5). We are also required to pass the ATI proctored exam with a level 1 and I ended up getting a level 2. What do you think my chances are of being granted this grade appeal and advancing into nursing II?
Thanks
To the OP... sorry you failed. Certainly, they could have found two points that you could have argued. However, you have to see it from their point of view. If they lower the passing standard by two points than the people who are failing by four will now feel like they should get a couple extra points to pass. It sucks but they HAVE to draw a line in the sand somewhere and a 77% is a lower standard than lots of school. Mine has an 80% but I heard of some with and 85%.
The lesson to learn here is that if you are in danger in a class you HAVE to meet with your instructor early on in the semester and go over your exams. Show your instructor how you studied and ask to be shown how you are missing the point. Then develop a new plan of study and show it to you instructor and ask for advice; this is will show determination and accountability on your part and will make them more likely to help you if you are a point or two shy of passing.
You can try to appeal. Generally you are scoring low. If you are scrabbling around for 1 point at the end of the semester to pass you are not going to get very far with an appeal. Your ATI score doesn't help your case.
Make sure you start your appeal with the instructor, not the administration, and be respectful. If you go in guns blazing and pointing fingers at him/her for poor exam writing they won't hear you.
Our school's pass rate is 83% for the class and you must have a cumulative average on exams of 80%. No rounding. They have raised the bar twice in 3 years and brought in the ATI as well.

It's group dynamics. Each response gets influenced by the ones before it. One starts it, a couple of others conform, and then the others start piling on.
The attitude of the professor is indeed the key to knowing if appealing questions has a chance to succeed. Some will be impressed that you're prepared and give you a chance. Some are too proud to admit they selected or wrote any vague/erroneous/unfair/unclear/off-topic questions.
