gud day to all! :wink2:

i just like to ask for ur opinions, suggestions, and/or recommendations on how i can further prepare b4 going to us early this year..

i'm from the phils., i just graduated last year (2008), i passed the june 2008 nle (local boards), and i took my nclex last dec and still waiting for the results.. i applied for california, and i'd like to know how things work in hospitals in the us, how i can prepare to get hired, and points on discerning whether the employer is a good choice or otherwise.. and what they expect and ask as well for their employees.. i have no problem with regards to my passport because i'm an american citizen, i dont need to take ielts or have a visa, that's why i can go directly to us..

and btw, my relative said she can refer me to a hospital in texas, and they said i can apply there when i get to us.. i know i need to have reciprocity because i applied for california.. can u give me advice with regards to this?

thanks and god bless!:)

As a new grad you may have problems finding a hospital in Ca but until you start applying to them you will not know. Getting your resume sorted would be a good step and there are a few places in this site which has some really good information here is one place https://allnurses.com/nursing-career-advice/

If you decide on Texas you will need to endorse your license and more than likely meet their requirements for foreign trained nurse which means CES

We do not have reciprocity between licenses, only the NCLEX has that. Once you take and pass the exam, then you can apply for a license by endorsement to Texas. But do be aware that they require the CES since you have trained out of the US.

As an new grad, you are going to find things quite tight in the CA market right now, many hospitals are having hiring freezes and/or lay-offs. Jobs are always going to go to a new grad that trained in the US over someone that trained in a system completely different from the US. Sure, you do not need to deal with immigration issues, but the fact remains that CA is listed about number 3 in terms of unemployed in the state.

Most definitely look at other states to have the best chance of getting hired at this time.

If you submitted a SSN# to the BRN, then your license should be issued shortly if not already and you can find it under the license verification area on the website for the BRN. Best of luck to you.

Since you were able to write the NLE, do you hold a green card for the US, or an actual passport from the US meaning that you hold dual citizenship?

thanks for your replies.. well, i filed for recognition as a filipino here in the country (for the reason that my parents are fil), that's why i was able to take the nle, but i don't think that it's exactly the same as a dual citizenship.. and i do hold a us passport..

btw, pardon me, but what does ces mean?

and i have applied for my ssn# already last sept, and it got mailed to me only late last nov, which means that i haven't included it yet on my nclex application since i applied for the exam around june..

i do hope i get a job in ca.. maybe it's just about patience and courage to look for one and be able to get it right during the interviews for me to get hired.. yeah, best of luck to me.. :saint:

CES is the credentials eval that is done thru CGFNS and is required for Texas before they will even look at your application.

Things are very tight all over CA at this time, as well as the fact that there are many new grads that actually trained in CA that are having problems getting hired as well. There are many more new grads than there are new grad programs available or facilities wishing to hire a new grad.

If you hold a US passport, why did not you not have the SSN# from when you got the passport? You also should have sent in the SSN# to CA BRN when you received it, or you are going to be waiting for the letter that you have passed the exam and not an actual license. They are unable to issue a license without the SSN# being submitted to them.

What I am trying to explain to you is that you are going to have many issues even getting to the point of an interview, things are that bad and getting worse. The state of CA is expected to start issuing IOUs on February 1 since they will be out of money, and that means that hospitals that need to receive payment from the state will also be getting these as well.

I would definitely look at other states, or your chances of getting hired are going to be quite slim. Even though you may hold a passport from here, you have still trained out of the US and do not have any experience here; that gives you more problems.

All I can say is best of luck to you.

Yes, California is looking for a bail out.

Unless you have a relative in a health care facility you will have an impossible time finding a job in California. Texas right now seems to be hiring.

This week I did a hospital orientation ( as a visiting faculty member) - the nurses in the orientation were all very experienced nurses who were laid off from their former jobs.

The best they could find is a per diem position. They are desperate and can not find any permanent employment. It seems like CA is in the same boat.

Also the hospital wanted to give these nurses a very short orientation ( 3 days) and expect them to work at 100% productivity. These experience nurses were complaining, no way a new grad could do this. This is the new reality.

so you mean i have to go get the ces first before applying in texas? how is it done? will i be doing exams again? any further requirements?

i hold a us passport because i'm a citizen due to place of birth, since i was born in san francisco. i haven't been able to file for my ssn# since then, and when i renewed my passport during 2nd yr college, i also haven't been able to apply for an ssn# immediately after that. so basically my nclex application came first even before my ssn# got to me. so how will i get my license then? would that be by the time i get in the us or i can get it while i'm still here? because if i try to get it here, maybe it'll take a while?

whew. things are just getting a lot tougher, huh. thanks for your replies on this, i really needed to know how everything is at this point, i don't wanna be clueless on what's going on in the world.

CES is a credential evaluation so no need to re sit any exams you just need to meet state requirements for foreign trained nurse. All information regarding CES can be found on http://www.cgfns.org. I would notify Ca of your SSN if you have it now, they will not issue a liense without it
