GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls

Published

Hi everyone! Just putting feelers out to see who is planning to apply to GPC for next Fall. I am taking my last pre-req, A&P II, this semester at GPC (well, almost last, still have to do that one credit Research class), and pondering when to take the TEAS. Before this semester I was out of school for a couple of years, and had kind of deferred my desire to attend nursing school. But it kept calling me, and I realized I HAVE to go for this now before my Science pre-reqs expire. GPC is actually the only school I've been able to find so far that lists them as good for six years as opposed to the usual five.

I'll be honest, I think I have a chance, but I also think it's a long shot. A lot is riding on how well I do on my TEAS, and getting an A in this class. In the beginning I was feeling very low about my chances, but recently my mindset has shifted, and I am feeling that hunger and drive to be accepted to nursing school. I definitely don't lack the brains, but I'm in recovery, so I have a spotty academic record. If I make an A in this class I will have a 3.0 in my Science pre-reqs and a 3.6 GPA for all the pre-reqs combined.

I also have concerns about my background check, as there are a few things on there, the most serious of which is very old - 16 years. So . . . one part of me knows that I have to cultivate an attitude of "whatever it takes" to get in. Retaking classes, applying for LPN as well, whatever I have to do.

It's pretty daunting to feel so simultaneously hopeful and excited about having a chance, and dwelling on the negative factors and seriously big mistakes that may kill my chances.

I'm really having to take it one step at a time. And every time I see someone in the cafeteria wearing the student nurses uniform I just think about how much I want to be wearing that uniform myself. It's something I really need for my life, my self-esteem, my family, to pursure this successfully. So that's me.

Where are you all in your journey? What are your concerns, struggles, hopes, and mindset? I look very forward to hearing from others. Even though we're competing against each other, we're still in it together and I think support is so valuable.

Tell me your story!

I'm very happy you said this. Because I am over the moon happy bc I have worked so hard to get to this point. BUT I have been a stay at home mom for the most part for my 5 and 2 year old boys. My world revolves around them literally. I'm so nervous about how I will be able to manage this but I'm going with it bc this is what I'm meant to do. I'm kind of just focusing on a day at a time bc if I think about the next two years I panic. We don't have any family here for help so it's scary but I realize God wouldn't bring me this far if he didn't think I could do it. Just wanted you to know you're not alone!

I am so blessed to have amazing in laws, who live a mile up the road. But , I don't want to burn them out so we will be doing some daycare a few days a week. My husband works a lot of hours, and sometimes out of town, so it will a rough few years for all of us :( my hubby will probably take it it the worst lol I tend to over take care of everything, because he does work hard for us, and now he will have to man up and pick up the slack :)

Ahh so lucky to have your in laws so close!! My hubby travels occasionally for work as well and I too take care of everything as I feel it's only right to be able to stay home with my babies :) I will be having a sit down talk to let him know how different things will be and that I will need his help. I also will be looking for daycare a few times a week most likely the days we have clinicals to make things easier. Sometimes it's just nice to know you're not alone in your thoughts lol I just plan to really enjoy this time until the program starts.

StepahnieHawley I have experienced those feelings before, especially with when they were young. I didn't cry, but I didn't even feel my mother could take better care of them than I could. My husband wouldn't allow our first daughter away from us until she was two. Unfortunately, I had to leave a newborn with my 18 year old. I delivered two days after Thanksgiving and headed back in Jan/Spring. I would talk to her while riding in the car on my way home. Like she could hear me!! That was to ease my heart. Sometimes I would race home to nurse her and race back to Chem. My son who is now 20 would tell me that he missed me and that we didn't talk anymore. I told him that we had been in the house together for 17 years. We have talked enough already. Every last one of them runs to my room the first instant they come home from school. Since I'm not on break they better get all the attention they need. Believe me they fight for it constantly! You will be fine. Kids have to learn that they can make it without you. I instilled independence in mine early on. Nine years and up can wash clothes...I don't see why not, I don't wear their clothes. My mom did every single thing for me until I left at 19. That can screw children up, but i didn't allow it to dampen my sense of responsibility. Your children will be fine and so will you.

Hey guys, just joined to get connected with possible future classmates! I got my acceptance letter today so I'm super excited to start in the fall!!!!! CAN'T WAIT! :)

It's a pleasure meeting all of you and I cannot wait to start nursing school :)! I'm 24 years old and I've been at GPC since fall of 2012. This is the first RN program I've applied to, but I applied and was accepted into an LPN program about 4 years ago; I never attended due to personal reasons. I'm currently attending gpc online full time and I'm working as a Geico Insurance Agent. I don't have any kids and I'm not married, so my biggest concern when I start the program is trying to maintain my career at Geico for as long as possible! I know I'm not going to be able to work as much as I am now, but I'm planning on working at least 30 hours a week. Unfortunately, I don't have a choice because bills still have to be paid. Are any of you going to work during the program?

I have a very close friend who finished with 5 kids and a part time job! It was very hard, but she pulled through! It may challenging but I'm sure you will be able to do it!

I have a 3 year old as well. Luckily, my husband is a lot of help. He's a firefighter and works 24/off 48, so he's generally home quite a bit. My son goes to a local Montessori school, but we are still going to have to hire some extra help. I live in Cumming, so I will have to leave really early to get to school without getting stuck in traffic, and my hubby is gone most mornings. So, we will have to get someone to come in most mornings and occasional afternoons. I think it will be manageable during the school year. I actually feel more guilty about this summer, since he will be home all day. I also just applied for a PRN position at CHOA. I am hoping to work 1 shift/week. We need to bring in a little extra money to cover the childcare costs from being in the program. It's so nice to know that there are so many of us in the same situation. Does anyone else live in North Ga?

Wow! Cumming is quite a trip to Clarkston, and I thought I had it bad from Rockdale! Childcare can get pretty expensive; I will have to count on student loans for that :/

I live in Gwinnett.

I live in Cumming too! And I have a 3 year old:) We're lucky that my husband works about 2 miles from our house and we are going to do pre-school at a church and child care in the subdivision on the other days I have school...I work 3 days a week now but I am not planning on continuing to work after school starts...at least not until I get a feel for how the load is:)
