You did not have a job offer. You had an offer for a future possible job. Unless it is in writing and specific, it is not a job offer (no, we would like to hire you to our med-surg floor). It needs to be what floor, what hours, what shift and the pay rate.
The other point is that most States are right to work States. That means that employers can hire and fire at will. Even a written job offer does not mean you can trust that you have a job in this economy.
This is very surprising to me. I have experienced the complete opposite in Canada. Typically, you don't get anything in writing until your first day of work. When someone says "We want to offer you a job and we are writing up the detail", it sounds like a job offer. I am so stupid to think I had a job! I am good at nursing, but I seem to suck at business!
so sorry to hear that.....unfortunately you must get the offer in writing here in the US. I was offered a job recently over the phone at a teaching hospital...my first words, i would like that in writing please....they emailed me the offer which works even better...much faster than mail..got the hard copy by mail days later. Don't give up, Brighams is very fussy so to get an offer even verbal means alot....apply elsewhere asap!!! try their partner Mass General.....also other hospitals in Boston.....wish you all the best.......

I don't understand what just happened. After I interviewed, I was told by an HR person at Brigham and Women's they were going to offer me a job as an RN. So, I waited patiently and stayed in contact, but they seemed to be taking more time than usual and I couldn't understand why. Until today, the HR person called and said that they were no longer going to offer me the job. Is this common practice in the US? I think it was totally unprofessional and has caused me weeks of stress.
How can the department say we are getting things together to offer you the job and the next minute change their mind? I am getting so frustrated with the job market here that I am ready to leave and go back to Canada. I am an experience nurse and I feel like my skills are being wasted! I even turned down another interview because I thought I had this job. How can they play with peoples lives like this!
Anybody else have stories like this?
