Published

Hello!

I got into Barry University's Accelerated Program for january of '07. Has anyone out there been accepted to? I feel so all alone! Please post or email me if you've gotten in and are super excited!

Congrats to you Yuca !

:studyowl: :Melody: :lol2: :biere: :smiley_aa :yelclap: :yeah: :w00t:

Whoa the accelerated would definitely make my brain explode!

I was accepted to the Baptist Scholars program at MDC today!

I guess the time is now to prepare mentally for the coming days!!!

I know what you mean about feeling alone out there. I went to my orientation at MDC and did not see one familiar face.

Best of luck to both of us!

Congratulations! :monkeydance: Good luck to all of us the Fall starters

OHHH my friend... I was in the program for 6 months!!! it is extremely hard!!! be prepared!!! yes It can be one of the "Best" Barry says but...they never tell you how difficult and expensive is...just to tell you if you fail two classes you are out of the program ...YES!!! out of any nursing program in Barry!!!most of the professor tell students they don't know how we do it....I do not recommended for anything in the word!!!we were almost 60 students begining the program and only 16 graduated!!! WHY TO GO TO A UNIVERSITY THAT SUCKS WHEN YOU CAN GO TO A NICE GOV. INSTITUTION!! BE CAREFUL MY FRIEND!!! ANY WAY IF YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THEM BE PREPARE TO NOT TO SLEEP FOR A YEAR!!!

As a former Barry student I must say it is a very good school. I went there to do a business degree long before I decided to become an RN and had a great experience. However, I know nurses who did the acc RN program there and, from what they've told me about it, Ludy's post is quite accurate. It is tough, and also VERY expensive. When I went to Barry (and this was years ago) the tuition there was around $18,000 a year, and they would nickle and dime the students half to death with all kinds of fees that added up to a lot more money. Of course, none of this included room and board or other incidental living expenses. I definitely wouldn't recommend Barry unless you and your parents have a lot of $$$ because believe me when I tell you, YOU WILL PAY!

Did you look into the program at FIU or FAU. FIU and FAU are both public universities but they have a solid reputation and if you are a Florida resident you can take 18 credits of classes for less than $2000 per semester.

Hello Ludy,

I'm so sorry to hear things did not go well. I'm hoping you can inform me as to what you did (if anything) and didn't like. Were the faculty helpful? The student handbook states that Barry is $12K per semester, but what other fees did you encounter (basically how much did you dish out, if it's not to personal to ask). What hours did you go to class? How many hours daily in rotations? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't know anyone personally in that accelerated program.

Thanks!

I was recently accepted into the program for Jan 07 also.

It was a relief to receive the acceptance letter, well at least till I saw the cost of attendance for 1 year 48,000. I have applied to MDC but my gpa is not so hot 3.3. I applied thinking that my previous degree would help---I was pre-med and took a truck load of science courses that I made Bs and Cs in and I even took courses in the Biomed Masters program at Barry.

I am primarily writing because I am not sure what to do. I would like to do the nursing program but it seems unfeasible---I have over 40,000 worth of debt from previous school loans and credit card debt. I just don't think it makes sense to take out another 50,000. Right now, I teach, and figured maybe teaching middle school math. I really do need to work out my finances because it is in a serious mess. I don't want to have 90,000 worth of debt but at the same time, I think I would prefer nursing to teaching----the kids can be just awful. Furthermore, it is still the same field of medicine which I do enjoy.

Hello there,

Yeah, I can definetly see your dilema. Why don't you seek out help from a financial planner or someone who can guide you through some planning and ideas on better handling your finances? I would do that before you make a decision. I know it's hard. I'm not getting ANY type of financial aid or scholarships either, just loans. I always say to follow your dreams, so if this is a dream of yours, i would do just about anything and pursue it. (But then again, it depends on your financial situation). I also applied to MDC, and my GPA is EXACTLY as yours...3.3....and it wasn't enough (applied for the past 3 semesters). It's too much competition at MDC, so Barry and other big universities aren't so hard on admissions (plus the amount of people applying is much less than at MDC). It seems like the entire planet is applying there. So, all in all, it depends up to you my dear. See what you can do with your finances and then try out different options. GOod luck!:wink2:

Hi,

Former student from Barry here! Anyway... Barry is tough, but doable. They do have other options such as the 2 year accelerated program which is what I did. You start out as the first year as the basic program but if you get all B's in all your classes (nursing and others because you need at least a 3.0 ) you get to accelerate the last 2-3years in 1 year. It's hard but if you put your mind to it, it can be done. I know alot of people who have also done the one year program but alot people fail as well. Our class started with 150, 33 of graduated. I think that people just hear nursing shortage or private school and they think nursing school is going to be a breeze! It is not!

You will have a great amount of loan from Barry but they do try to work with you in terms of financial aid. If you have a BS already in another field it's very hard to get money for another one and it's not Barry's fault it's financial aid.

I have heard good thins about Nova, but their program is 4 years not accelereated and most of our profs from Barry are teaching over there now because they make more money at Nova... lol!

Hope I helped!

Hi everyone!! This is my first post, woo-hoo!! I also wll be attending Barry's accelerated program in January. I'm so excited and nervous as well! I was worried about the cost, but I've heard such good things about Barry that I think I've made the best decision.

Hi everyone, nice to know there are some barry grads out there on this site. I'm also a barry grad from 1997. And everything everyone is saying is true: very expensive, veery, very hard, but also very doable. The way I see it if I could do it anybody can. I was married and was raising a child at the time and running a business from home. However, my last year I ate, slept and pooped nursing. I do feel that those that do graduate from their program come out with a better education in nursing. Their method of teaching is "critical thinking". YOu come out knowing why it is you are doing something (in nursing I mean).

Anyway best of luck to all those who will be attending and KUDOS to all those who made it!!!!!

Well it looks like it is that time of year again. That time when people are waiting to hear what school they got into. I have applied at Barry and MDC. Both schools have their merits.

Miami Dade - Cheaper and soon to have BSN program.

Barry - Smaller and have a well established BSN program. And for me, A LOT easier commute.

I have a 4.0 GPA as of now and by the end of next week (finals) will have all my pre-reqs completed (hopefully the GPA survives).

Anybody else out there?
