Got into ACNP program

Hi, I just got accepted into an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program. I will be living in Springfield, Missouri when I graduate. Does anyone know what the job prospects are in that area? Also, likelihood of 12 hour shifts as an ACNP or part time work while I have young children? I'm really excited to have gotten in, but I want to know if the job will realistically work for my family.

I do one week on, one week off. I'm on the east coast. I think there are a range of options out there, you just have to find them. Nothing is unheard of, really.

Sorry your life decisions are being questioned by strangers in an online forum. Lol, only in nursing...

*sigh*

Well if you brought the same questions up to my old college roommates (or anyone on the various medical forums) who are in med school now they would laugh you off the forums...

Can new resident physicians work part time? Are 12 hour shifts not the norm anymore in inpatient?

An online forum is exactly what it is, a largely anonymous placed for people to post what they want when they want. If you don't like the answers then you don't have to ask a question or read any posts. As long as a post doesn't breach TOS, nothing is above scrutiny or criticism.

I know many inpatient NPs that work part time just like I know many physicians and PAs that work part time.

Have no answers to your questions... Just wanted to say CONGRATS on getting accepted!!! I'm plugging along in an AG-ACNP program right now and I also have young kids. It's tough- but (hopefully) worth it!! Good luck to you!!

So you would recommend a brand new ACNP to work inpatient part time? Okay. My comment was addressing brand new residents and or NPs not experienced providers. As we all know resident physicians do not work part time.

I don't think I have enough data to make a recommendation like that. From having been through the transition to practice, my thoughts would be this:

1. Just because physicians do it doesn't mean everyone else has to nor does it mean it's best practice. Residents working long hours benefits the hospital the most, and hospitals were forced to reduce residents' hours do to data on poorer outcomes with more hours.

2. Working full time certainly gets a provider up to speed faster. I don't think it always gets a provider up to speed more efficiently. For example, a provider making the role transition to practice that has more time to look things up and write good notes will likely have better outcomes than a provider who has time to only work (based on common sense and some professional experience in the role).

3. There may be some type of "immersion factor" (akin to learning a foreign language) with working full time that would offset the potential drawbacks.

4. Working less hours will likely make for a longer lasting provider by avoiding some of the burn out the comes from role socialization as a provider.

Again, I don't know of much data on the topic, so I am making some guesses based on my experience in the role.
