got accepted both MSN FNP and Post-BSN DNP. Which way to go?!

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I have been accepted to both MSN FNP and Post-BSN DNP (UMDNJ and Rutgers). I have 2.5 years of med/surg backgroud.

MSN is 2.5 yr long full-time and DNP is 3 yr long. Both schools are pretty much same distance from my house. I just moved to NJ so I am out of state status anyways.

I originally wanted to pursue MSN just because it is little bit shorter and I wasn't too sure if I was ready for DNP. But now after finding out that I was accepted to Rutgers, I don't know what to do. As far as Rutgers, this fall semester is their very first semester for Post-BSN DNP program. I know that Rutgers has a great reputation, but I don't want to be a guinea pig either since they are just starting this program. But, on the other hand, I can pursue higher degree with just 6 more months compare to UMDNJ.

Any current FNP or FNP students can give me some recommendation please?

what did you wind up doing? it kind of makes sense to do the DNP. i'm curious- what was your education before this? i have a non-nursing BA & MA & (ADN Nursing/RN) & wondering if there is a DNP program that would take me (with a bridge course or two).

I would go for the DNP since DNP will be mandatory in 2015!!!

Hi, I decided to go for DNP at the end :)

I have BSN, and Rutgers required you to have BSN to get into DNP program (not sure about other schools). There were many classmates who just finished RN-BSN program.

Specializes in Family Practice, Urgent Care.

DNP may be required in 2015. But even if you chose MSN/NP you would be grandfathered in if you are enrolled now.

what did you use for your 2 scholarly papers? Essays from college? If I don't have any of my essays from my college years, do you have any other recommendations of how to get 2 scholarly articles for application?

This is incorrect. There is no mandatory DNP requirement. By now, nurses pursing advanced degrees should know this.
