Goodwin college

i've been attending goodwin for a year now & i'm not sure if i want to stay there. has anyone been in their nursing program or in it now. i need some kind of solitude, they have changed some of the criteria making it extremely hard to get in the program. i still have a ways to go but i'm kinda torn b/c i had a good last two semesters but the advisors are discouraging and quite frankly i don't think they know their elbow from thei ass****.

Personally i think that its all about favortism in that school, Basically if you kiss a lot of a** you have a higher chance of getting in. First of all Goodwin's nursing program is very new and because they are a so called private institution they charge almost $500 per credit. I mean you would think it was Harvard or something. From my understanding they are very close to loosing their accredidation because their pass rate on the NCLEX has been so low. Dont get me wrong they have some wonderful professor's that do a really great job teaching. However i cant tell you much about their nursing program only that it is extremely hard to get into.l I think you should apply to other nursing programs in different colleges to better your chance of actually being accepted into one.

Unfortunately your understanding is wrong. I get pinned in 2 weeks, the pass rate is in the high 90's-thanks to the pressure of having to pass the HESI in order to graduate. Also, the school just got approval for a BSN program that will be starting at the new Riverfront campus soon. The campus is being built in phases and the first phase will have plenty of classrooms to jumpstart. So Goodwin is turning into a 4 year college.

ALL, nursing programs are extremely difficult to get into. I took all my pre-req's there and applied with a 3.97 GPA and got in on my first try. I even got in before having micro out of the way and took it with Nurs100 upon signing a waiver. Let me add that I am a minority, English as a second language and work full-time. Plus, CT is not even my home state.

Having said that, MANY of my friends/classmates did not get in and had a 3.5 gpa. MANY factors are considered in your acceptance:

1). Where did you take your pre-req's? It matters because the more you transfer in the less points you get. You get a points for courses taken @ Goodwin not at the local CC.

2). What is your GPA? Did you repeat any courses?

3). What was your NLN pre-entrance exam score?

4). Volunteer work, letters of recommendation etc?

I really don't think it's about favoritism. You have got to remember that 75% of the ppl there are going for nursing. There is a TON of competition out there and unfortunately that is how it is almost everywhere you go in the nation.

I am so sorry you did not get accepted. My advice is to keep trying and see where you might be falling short compared to the rest of the folks applying with you. The spots are super limited :o

Future RN Jess...

I recently stumbled on this forum, and after reading some of the posts about goodwin I was hoping maybe you could give me some advice. I too am a student at Goodwin, I took all my prerequisites at Manchester Community College and applied for the fall 2007 semester at Goodwin to complete my clinical/nursing classes. I am proud to say I got accepted and so I have started my nursing 100 this Sept. However, I completely feel like a fish out of water. Not only am I the "newbie" since everyone else has been in the program together for some time now, but I am a nervous wreck! I have always been a good student- when I was at MCC I graduated with high honors and never really felt I had to work that hard to get good grades (and I in no way mean that to sound like I am bragging, I am the most humble person alive), but since I started at Goodwin I feel like my past record doesn't matter and I'll be lucky to pass with a C if I pass at all. Everyone just seems so discouraging, for example my fellow classmates talk about how students who transfer in like I did usually fail; the fact that I have no past experience in the medical field (CNA, etc) means I'll probably do poorly; that they have looked at posted grades for other nursing classes and most the grades weren't passing, with nothing above a C, and that even if I was lucky enough to have a 4.0 many people come all that way only to fail the NCLEX. I just feel so deflated- not only am I nervous because it's new to me but then I hear all this kind of discouragement in addition and I just feel like I have a better chance of winning the lottery than passing nursing at Goodwin. One student even told me that nursing school is so hard it doesn't matter how well I did at my last college, it doesn't mean I'll do good here. At this point I don't know who or what to believe... and it's so disheartening like I said because everyone now has me feeling that I am certain to fail, and nursing is what I've wanted to do with my life for as long as I can remember.

Another thing they have me wondering about is the amount of work-I know it won't be easy but they make it sound like if I'm not studying from sunrise to sunset then I'm doing something wrong, and again, I'm going to fail.

Any words of advice from someone with a little more experience??

DLC - I am sorry to hear you are having a negative experience at Goodwin. I am in my 3rd semester there. I took a few pre reqs at Goodwin but not all of them. People that have been at Goodwin since they started school treat people from other schools the way you are describing. They are just envious that you did not have to fork out all the money they did to get their pre reqs done. They are also jealous of anyone who gets in that did not do all or most of their reqs at Goodwin. It's crap but that's a lot of their attitude there. The school had to amp up their NCLEX scores by allowing the best and the brightest in. That's why you are there. Don't listen to those people. You will do fine. Nursing school is very challenging, anywhere you go. I'm not going to say that Goodwin is not challenging because it is. It's challenging anywhere. i am sorry you are getting discouraged by some folks. please don't believe everything you hear. yes, the program was very challenging but not impossible and you will be successful.

i am a new grad from goodwin, passed hesi with flying colors first time, graduated with honors from goodwin and have no medical experience or background.......not even cna.

Just wanted to say thanks to both RN Jess and Nurturingkneads for your words of encouragement, it has definitely helped to put my mind at ease.:) but did either of you find that it was that literal around the clock studying? I feel like that's a bad question because everyones study habits are different as well as how many other obligations they have, but I'm just hoping to get a little more insight on what to expect- still not sure if I'm overstudying or not studying enough.

Dlc, although I do not attend Goodwin College, I believe you will do well. Do not allowed those negative comments to discourage you; instead, use them to prove everyone wrong. The first semester of nursing for me was a bit challenging. I managed to pull a B+. I was reading everything in the book. My second semester got better because I was able to know what was more important in the book to read. Now, I am on my third semester, I hope to continue to do well.

Nursing is not easy, but it is doable if you stay focus. Do not be around chickens, hang around eagles....so you can fly.

futurenurse35- thanks for the advice/encouragement, I think things will get getter for me after the first semester, like you were saying, I'm not sure what I do and don't need to study yet. I like your quote about the eagles, my mom actually told me the same thing lol.

i currently am attending my 3rd semester at goodwin in the nursing program.

fact - i transferred in every credit except, chemistry, lifespan development, public speaking, and algebra ii

fact - i scored a 97 percentile on the nln - it is not as hard as many may have told you!!

fact - yes, the nursing program is difficult but not impossible! you will be studying a fair amount of the time, approximately 20 hours per week. you do have to dedicate a good portion of your life to the program - but it is going to be so worth it in the end. you will feel times of stress, crying, being so sick of jamming information into your brain; you'll long, yearn, ache for those measley 2.5 wks off in btw semesters, you will spend more at this college (and yes, they have yet to work out many kinks) - but it's fixable, there will be days where you think you've made the wrong choice, then - you see a patient smile after you've given them a back rub, see them relax, and hear them say their aches aren't so bad anymore --- you feel that they were truly thankful for your help, and this warms your heart so much, the stress melts away (for the time being of course :wink2:)

nursing school is dynamics - full of emotion, both good and bad, but when it's good, it's oh so good. and think of how many different opportunites will be available to you once you've acheived that rn degree!

plus - the program is only a year and a half long!

this all coming from a gal that had the worst experience in clinical today!

I have an interview next week, what questions do they ask? Do they interview everyone who's passes the NLN?

well when I had my interview she asked questions like, what would you do if you saw someone cheat on a test, why do you want to become a nurse... I don't know how they determine who they do/dont interview, or if they just interview everyone applying. And I don't want to discourage you, but I am on my third semester in the program and I honestly must say that I DO NOT like goodwin. I sorely regret attending this college for my degree, I got accepted to other schools and wish I had chose one of them instead. They may be off probation but they are still so new that they are unorganized and you as the students are basically the guinea pigs, at your own expense. Many of the staff have never taught before in their life and have no clue what they are doing, especially at clinical sites, many students do not get the learning experiences they should be. And despite what the college says about being a community that tries to work close with the students and cares about the students, thats a load of crap. They play games with the clinical sign ups... I had signed up for a spot and without even telling me they gave my spot to another person because they had a scheduling conflict. I was then left without a clinical spot and almost had to withdraw from the program for a semester because of it. They have done similarly shady things like this to others students I talk to. If you have other options I would consider them.
