Good or bad idea? Job application related.

If you have an upcoming interview at a facility and another position becomes available in an area of your interest (same hospital system), would you also apply for that job?

EX: I applied for a telemetry position and then a position in the OR became available in the meantime.

Of course I would, especially if it was a job I thought I'd like better. I just started a new position, and I think I had about 5 active applications when I accepted my new job... You just never know what your interview will pan out to...

Of course. You don't know that you will get the first job...or if you will even want it after the interview. It's always good to have options.

Well I didn't the other position I interviewed for (at another facility) so I agree it's good to have options.

I would apply for both. Employers know that it's an insane job market and people are going to apply for every position they can, so it shouldn't surprise them.

I just had to deal with this myself! I applied for 2 positions at a hospital and got called for an interview to both in the same week! I felt the same as you. Would it look bad interviewing for both? I even bumped into the nurse manger I interviewed with first while waiting for the second interview! I loved the 1st department but knew the 2nd one was not for me at all! Guess the nurse manager felt the same way because I was not offered a position. Still have my fingers crossed for the other department. So, apply, apply, apply!!! You never know what will (or won't!!) happen.

If they ask you can frame it in terms of your interest in the facility: "I'm very interested in working at X hospital because of (your reputation in patient care? your contribution to research? what about them stands out?) so I was pleased to see you have openings in two units I'd be thrilled to work for."

Most employers don't care (shows drive) anyway; apply for both. Now if you were applying for more then two it might raise a red flag but not with two. It only increases your chances of getting hired and there's nothing wrong with that.
