Golden West College (GWC) ADN Fall 2023

Updated:   Published

Hey!  It might be a little early to start this, given that applications aren't open yet, but I noticed that the multi-criteria points system was updated in September 2022.  I thought I remembered being in better shape when I looked at the old points system in past semesters ? so I was curious to hear from anyone else who is planning to apply and see where we all stand.

I haven't taken the TEAS yet, but not including my TEAS score I have 56 points so far, and I'll have a max of 81 depending on my score.

@Whit Gregory RDCS RVTthanks! It took a good 2 days to finally sunk in that I got accepted. Since this is my first and only school I applied to, I could not believe it! ? How are you preparing btw? I feel like I need to study to prepare but do not know where to start.

Same here! I applied to a couple of private schools just in case, but GWC was the only one I was interested in going to, so I am SO relieved to be in! Preparation-wise, I am currently taking pharmacology through Chaffey College to get a head start. I only signed up for it because I wasn't sure if I would get in and wanted to improve points to apply to SAC, but by the time we got acceptances, it was too late to drop. Oh well, one less thing to have to take later. I'd say just enjoy your Summer! Have you scheduled titers yet? I'm planning to do that next week hopefully.

@Whit Gregory RDCS RVTthat's actually a good idea. When I read your reply I checked right away & there is still a spot left for a Summer pharm class, which has not started yet. Too bad I cannot register anymore since I took it already. I was actually enjoying my Summer until I got the letter and have been anxious since then. ?

I'm in the same boat as you in that I'm currently taking Pharmacology at Saddleback to boost my application for the next cycle, but then was accepted to Fall 23. From what I can see in the curriculum https://www.goldenwestcollege.edu/Links/pdf/nursing/Associate-of-Science_retired-new.pdf , there's no pharmacology. I asked GWC's counselor and they said I could drop without any effect on admission (even with a W on transcript). Do you know if pharmacology is one of the courses? Because if it's not required, I'll probably drop it. Anyone in the program right now, can you confirm if pharmacology is part of the curriculum?

I believe that if pharm is required we would have to take it thru the program because it consists of dosage calculations. I wouldn't take it now.

Has anyone else not received a reply email from the GWC admissions after submitting your acceptance?

Update: just received it ?

anyone started on their titers yet?

Short Answer: Pharmacology class is not currently a requirement, therefore you can withdraw. It is also not in the curriculum so you will not be taking Pharm on top of your Nursing Classes while in the program.

Long Answer: HOWEVER! You are dealing with drugs and pharmacological reactions on a constant basis both in class and in the clinical setting. It is extremely useful to have an understanding of types of medications and how they interact with the body or other meds. This knowledge is VERY useful for exams, understanding the material, and the clinical setting.

Ex: knowing the difference between and ACE Inhibitor and Beta Blockers will help you understand how a patient's other medical issues/comorbidities are being managed and what medications should the HCP (Doctor) be made aware of because it can result in an adverse reaction or increase risk for organ failure/death.

A good number of my cohort has gotten by without taking Pharmacology, regardless of their background/experience in the medical field or medications in general. I myself wouldn't have survived without it because my medical experience before Nursing is not significant and my brain is "meh."

Hope that helps you decide.

@Megan Ward congratulations! Did you just receive it today after the June 16th deadline? I have a coworker who lost hope already since he did not get any acceptance/denial email.

@Kenji12345 is the pharm (specifically g200 from gwc) alongside g160 patho/dse mech the same exact classes you will need for the BSN program?

I actually got accepted for fall 2023 on the 13!  When I emailed back to accept the spot, I didn't hear back for awhile if they had received it, so that's what I was wondering about!
Sorry to hear about your coworker! I hope he gets some answers soon!

@dlhnt I suggest to have your friend call the school. I didn't receive anything after deadlines as well, I called two days later and received what should've been sent to me on the 13th. Hope this helps.

Hmm, not sure I understand your question, would you mind clarifying?

I think what you are asking is: if we take Pharm G200 and Pathophys/Disease Mech G160, do those transfer over to BSN programs? If that is your question, check below, but if I'm wrong, please correct me and I will answer accordingly.

This depends on which BSN program you are looking at (there are slight differences even when comparing CSULB to CSUF even though they are both Cal States) since there are both CSU and private (Ex: Grand Canyon, Capella, Stanbridge, West Coast) BSN programs you can transfer to. Because this, it is best to either reach out to the GWC Nursing counselor or to the BSN program you want to transfer to/are curious about. This is what I know so far about CSUF and CSULB, but again, I strongly suggest you reach out to a counselor:

According to the CSUF's and CSULB's "RN-BSN Roadmaps," neither pharmacology or pathophys are requirements to transfer unlike Chem, Stats, or Humanities transfer work. CSUF and CSULB have a Pahtophys course for Nursing in their BSN program, but if they'll take GWC's instead, honestly no idea. Pharm is not even on the BSN program for either.

Again, this is subject to change and I strongly recommend you reach out to the BSN program or the GWC Nursing counselor for clarification. I took pharm for my own benefit and pathophys was not available before I got in to the Nursing program so I never worried if they would apply to the BSNs.

Sorry I couldn't be more useful.

Hello Hannah, I've yet to receive an email regarding uniforms. I've only received the titers email. When did you receive the email regarding uniforms??
