Golden West College (GWC) ADN Fall 2023

Updated:   Published

Hey!  It might be a little early to start this, given that applications aren't open yet, but I noticed that the multi-criteria points system was updated in September 2022.  I thought I remembered being in better shape when I looked at the old points system in past semesters ? so I was curious to hear from anyone else who is planning to apply and see where we all stand.

I haven't taken the TEAS yet, but not including my TEAS score I have 56 points so far, and I'll have a max of 81 depending on my score.

My booster doesn't follow the timeline. Does that mean I will have to get the series again?

No, you don't have to repeat the series. That alert is the guideline, and if you got your boosters, your provider very much follows that timeline and spacing each dose. What I did was input my vaccine date for each dose that I received

@HopefulNursingAJF and @Mhovey10, apologies on my tardiness, but it looks like @violet_flower has you covered because I can't answer any better ?. Thank you Violet_flower!

Anyone done their lab tests yet? I'm confused on the Hep B and Hep B  Core antibody titer. For those who did their labs, are they separate lab tests? I only had the Hep B done that's why and on complio there are two.

I believe the hep B titer is a panel so you will get results for both.

Thanks @violet_flower I am Spring '24 cohort but that does give me a good idea of expectations. Do you think it is reasonable to work while doing first semester if I already have my CNA?

Hi @HopefulNursingAJF apologize for the delay in response. Honestly, I think it really depends on you and your goals in nursing school. I can provide some insight for you to think about.

Some questions to think about.

-Do you have to work financially?

-If so, can you reduce your hours? How flexible is your work schedule?

-How are you at school in general? on top of that nursing school is pretty different. How are you at test taking and the amount of time you need to study, do homework, and have a somewhat personal life outside of school? (nursing school takes up a lot of time)

-Have you balanced work and school before?

-Do you have a support system? friends, family, etc

-Are you on the ADN track or the CEP track? I can only speak on behalf of the regular ADN track.

-I had some cohort who worked part and full time during first semester, but some say it was doable and some say it was quite hard. For example, a fellow cohort works full time 12 hour shifts. Class was Tuesday, his clinical was Wed, and his lab was on Friday. He would work 3 days a week which would result in only 1 day that he had nothing. Just keep in mind that you have lots of studying outside of class for lectures, lab prep, ATI homework, group projects, clinical (you are exhausted at the end of the day) and clinical paperwork that takes many many hours and is due within 48 hours.

-What other responsibilities do you have besides nursing school?

For myself, nursing is my second career. I chose not to work in nursing school since I knew it would be new and challenging and I wouldn't say I am naturally smart or anything. I have to spend a lot of hours studying and I do not think I would have enough time to study on top of working and all the stress on top of that. Besides this fact, I also have other responsibilities as well. I have a family with 2 young kids so that in itself is another challenge balancing everything and doing well in nursing school. In my case, I definitely needed to have a strong support system especially having young kids. I can elaborate if anyone was interested.

@Kenji12345if you have insight as well to working during nursing school, I am sure others may benefit.

Again, as I mentioned, everyone is different. It varies per person but just wanted to give you some questions to think about. Hopefully, that helps.

So what @violet_flower said is more or less my own experience and very good advice. Seriously, listen to violet_flower, much better than what I can give because they are on the same curriculum as you.

To give you a little more context, I have 2 contrasting stories but similar backgrounds. My friend and I are both single, no kids, and need to work a bit.

My friend is an EMT at the ED for one of the nearby hospitals. They would work 1-2 shifts a week, go to lecture, and attend clinicals, somehow find time to study and complete all the assignments. They were on it, and has kept it going for all 3 of our semesters and plans to do it for 4th with a high B to A average.

I was not so lucky. I was working a part time construction job and nearly failed out in 2nd (the curriculum has changed so it shouldn't be as hard or time consuming for you as it was for us). I quit my job, focused on my studies and managed to pass 2nd semester. 3rd I did not work and got a B, but developed much more efficient time management and study skills. It was a very frugal semester and I struggled a bit, but I made it. 4th: I decided to take on a PCA/CNA job this Summer, and will be working 1 shift per week. However, my boss already know at the first sign of trouble, I will quite and focus solely on my studies, then again I'm per diem so no loss there.

Everyone is going to deal with it differently so some can do it others can't. Also, as the semesters progress, things become slightly more difficult and you have less time for yourself. So even if you are able to maintain your job in 1st and 2nd, you might not be able to in 3rd and 4th for example.

Hope that helps,

Kenji

Did anyone make a fb for Spring?

Hey everyone, just to get it started, I made a Spring 2024 GWC ADN facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/gwcadn2024spring/

Is this a public group? Link doesn't work.
