Going to TN from AZ with License- New Grad

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hey y'all! I've been trying to find information about what I should do regarding my situation. I hope someone can help and clarify.

I will hopefully be graduating in Dec 2015 with my ADN from Arizona. My family is planning on moving to Tennessee when I graduate so I am unsure how to go about applying for jobs. Do I have to work in Arizona my first year or is it possible to get a job in another state? I'm not sure how I would go about any of this. I will be taking my NCLEX in AZ after graduation. How will this work as far as me moving? Hope this makes sense, but I just want to know how I should prepare. Do I stay in AZ and work or do I move to TN and hope it all transfers (if that's how it works because I'm unsure of that too)? Thank you in advance!

How soon after graduation would you move? It may make more sense to simply take the NCLEX in your new home state. Otherwise, you would have to endorse your license from your current state to your new state. The requirements for that would best be found from the TN BON.

The interstate endorsement rules begin on page 3.

If you don't want to get a job in AZ before you move, then apply for license by exam in Tenn. and take your test in either AZ or TN. It doesn't matter where you take the test, it is a national exam (no differences between states).

Yes, this. Apply for licensure by exam to the TN BoN. When you get your ATT, schedule to test in AZ. You can physically take the test wherever you please. It doesn't have to be the state that you went to school in OR the state you are testing for licensure in. You can go to school in AZ and take NCLEX in NM (if, say you lived on the AZ/NM border and there were more options for dates/times in NM than AZ) for licensure in TN.

Thank you all for your responses! I didn't set up my notifications right so I just now saw these. I appreciate your time and was lucky enough to meet with an advisor who also said what was posted here.
