Going to NP school

Published

So, I have decided to go back and get my NP. Im very nervous that Im not going to maintain my high B in the program but Im going for it! I am not sure which field is more in demand or which one I would be able to get a job quicker. I am in between FNP and PMHNP. Any suggestions on a program and field? Thanks!! Im in the Dallas area.

I'm surprised that you have years of experience in psych but don't know the Psych NP job market. It's good, much better than FNP for the most part. But in some large cities, even psych NPs are becoming saturated.

Aim for the best program and the specialty you're most passionate and good at. Know the roles so you can see where you fit in.

Most of my experience is in Corrections. The local forensic hospital is usually hiring PMHNP's. I think they start around 85k. Nothing great.

Never thought about furthering my career, so never really looked into it. Just heard of other NP's talk about it. Thanks for the advice, It helps other people's opinions.

I totally agree.

If your heart is set for pmhnp, definitely follow that desire. That population sure needs quality NP's caring for them.

My area is flooded with FNP's fighting for jobs paying around RN wages of 120k. Pmhnp are in very high demand her and the compensation is very attractive.

The best thing to do is check out your local market by looking at the job ads.

^ by attractive, I am talking up to $170k year (private practice). It's different by location and supply and demand of course. The FNP jobs continue to fall because there are so many graduates. Most RN in this area make 120k....yet I have seen ads and posted them here of FNP positions starting at 99k. Too many FNP, not enough jobs in this part of California.

Again, varies by location. Check out the ads in your area and sites like Glassdoor to get an idea of your area.

That is a significant difference. Thank you so much for your advice! Makes alot of sense. Our pmhnp at out facility is making around that, but I just figured she just got lucky.. lol...But, I am pretty decided on what to do now! Thanks!
