Going back to college with foreign education

Published

I am from South Africa and did a 4 year diploma in nursing science from a local college. I graduated as a RN and Midwife. I have since moved to the US and have a NY State RN license.

I have been looking into doing my BSN and it is very confusing. I had my Transcripts evaluated and it said I had a equivalent of a 3 year graduate nurse diploma plus an additional specialization in midwifery. What does that mean?????? Do I just need one more year of college or what?????Has anybody gone thru this??

I attended a 4 year college that is aproved by the board of education in my country. I had my transcripts send to CGFNS in order to get my license from NY State. This has been a couple of years ago. I have since worked with my RN license in the states. My husband was transfered to Germany for 3 years and I am unable to find a nursing job here. I figured I have the time now if I wanted to get my BSN/Masters.

Recenlty I send my transcripts to a private company that will take copies of your transcripts and is supose to tell you what your education level in the US would be. I haven't actually chosen a college yet because I wanted an idea of where I stand first.

I am assuming you are still in Germany. Most U.S. colleges evaluate foreign credits on an individual bases. They require submission of an offical transcript, as well as course content, course requirements, etc in evaluating if they will grant credit or not. I know of no college that accepts private evaluations. And I have attended two programs, at two different universities, in NYC and NYS, although my education is all U.S. based.

My best advice choose a program and submit an application and a request. SUNY Stoney Brook, Sage Colleges are just two of the colleges that I am aware of that have on line classes. I know that Stoney Brook has some clinical areas, supervised, outside of NYS or they use to. Check their website.

Good luck

hi; Where did you send your transcripts for evaluation? _thank you

I used Education International INC. This was done after I have received my license with copies of my transcripts.

If your husband is in the US Military or a civilian For the US government, go to the Education Center on the nearest military base. They can help with getting your records evaluated and the are several universities that have classes on base or on-line. You can even get discounted tuition or grants.

Did you go thru the Visa Screen process for a green card?

Even to get license as a foreign-trained nurse in the US, your training has to be at the first level and in many areas is considered the same as a BSN.

My husband is a US citizen, so I got my greencard thru marriage to him. I did not have to get a work visa. I just know I had to do the English test and send my transcripts to CGFNS. After that I did the NCLEX and got my license.

Did CGFNS do an evaluation for your training? To be able to sit for the NCLEX-RN as a foreign-trained nurse, your training has to be equivalent to a BSN at least in terms of the nursing part of the program. You may just be missing a few of the extraneous courses. That is why I am telling you to apply for one of the MSN programs instead, and just make up any of the required ccourses that they say that you need.

Training overseas to get licensed in the US is very different from going to school in the US where you can just attend a two year program and be permitted to sit for the exam here. AS a foreign-trained nurse, there are no longer any two year programs that are accepted from overseas.

Thank you for all the advice. This is also what I understood when I was looking into getting my license in the US. I am going to make an appointment with the university of phoenix. They have an office here. I will talk to the counselor and see if I can do my Masters in Nursing Informatics with what I got. If not, I am sure they will have some advice.

Thank you again,

Tanya

More than likely they will accept what you have........that was the program that I was talking about. Please let me know what they say...........

I worked with two RNs from South Africa who also specialized in Midwifery when they had their transcripts evaluated they both had the equivilent of a BSN. One went right into clinical instructing for the local CC and the other transferred out as soon as her contract was up. It may be worth a try to have them reevaluated.

Good Luck.

Would you please explain it to me what does it mean : BSN and MSN?

Thank you,

Mo

A BSN is a bachelor of science in nursing. It is an undergraduate degree.

A MSN is a masters of science in nursing. It is a graduate degree.
