I volunteered to work the floor as a CNA tonight. First of all.....WTF WAS I THINKIN?? 4 of us for 75 residents.....I had a whole wing to myself!!! Talk about feeling outnumbered! I have always appreciated the CNAs that I work with but after tonight I must say I have a new found respect for them. I honestly didn't think I was gonna last the whole 8 hours.....so to all of you who are CNAs.....God bless you and KEEP UP THE (HARD) WORK!!!
Belinda, thanks so much for bringing this thought forward. In the past, I worked a Med/surg floor with two awesome CNAs, Bunny and Maria. They were efficient, intelligent, experienced and intuitive. Having them as my healthcare colleagues was invaluable. Both are enjoying a well-deserved retirement now, but the facility where I currently work has its own phalynx of outstanding CNAs. I use them as role models for multiple student groups, from high school Health Careers students to RN students. I appreciate the privilege of working with each and every one. :kiss
I don't know of a unit anywhere that could exist without it's CNA's. They are under apprecitated and underpaid. I love mine. They truely are the backbone of any unit. To all CNA's out there, keep up the good work. To all of you nurses out there that are too busy to help, or think it isn't there job to assist the CNA's SHAME ON YOU!! Who do you think would be doing all the changing, turning bathing etc if they weren't there? I too get upset when nurses choose to sit on their behinds instead of helping out the CNA.
I know I couldn't function without the Aides I work with, and neither could my unit. I try to make it a point at the end of each shift to thank each one as they leave...their hard work and professionalism make it possible for me to do my job.
We have a new woman working with us who is just incredible...no hospital experience, but picked up the job really fast. And, she's developed the talent of anticipating what I will need and when. Talk about a "Keeper!!"
Thank you to all the CNAs out here; you're indispensible and well-appreciated!
