Hello future GMU nursing students! I just got my acceptance letter from the nursing department today and wanted to reach out to my soon-to-be classmates! Who else got in to the program and plans to attend!?
FYI, you have to click all the way through everything on the accepted students information page from your link and check a box that says "I accept" and click submit. I almost did not get there - so don't do it from your phone. Speaking of things I can't find, I somehow still cannot find the Facebook group. The link above takes me to the Facebook login or my own newsfeed. I swear I am good at the internet.
I tested it and had a friend and family member test it and if you type "GMU Accelerated BSN Fall 2016 Entry" in to the search bar in Facebook the group should pop up. Not sure why it's not working! Maybe if you are Facebook friends with someone in the program they can add you.
Hi Everyone,Congratulations on your acceptances! I will be applying for the Fall 2017 cycle. If any of you would not mind, could you tell me what your backgrounds are? I'm trying to gauge if I am a competitve applicant. Thank you!
Same with me. Fall 2017 hopeful. Working on my pre-reqs at NOVA right now. My background is biology degree with psychology minor in 2004 with 3.27 GPA. Worked last 12 years in a biotech lab. I expect to finish my pre-reqs with mostly As maybe a B/B+ in there, we'll see.
Good luck to those applying for the 2017 entering cohort! I feel like GMU really did look holistically at the applicants. I have a BS and MPH, but my undergrad grades weren't great. HESI was 95%. I'm still wrapping up pre-reqs, but had an "A" in all classes (A&P I, microbio, stats) at time of application. I've been in the workforce in an office job for almost 10yrs, so I have a good amount of experience on that front. Also volunteered at INOVA for a few months and have nurses in my family who have given me a grounded perspective of the profession. If you look at past threads about class profiles, I think you'll find that people admitted have pretty diverse qualifications, so you never know! Hope that helps.
For those who have attended the transfer orientation, do they have financial aid counselors available to speak to at all? I'm doing quite a bit of research on federal and private loans, but it would be nice to actually talk to someone since there are different considerations with this being a one-year, second-degree program.
I'm currently an ABSN student at Mason. We have a wide variety of students, all kinds of backgrounds. If you're prepared to work for it, you will succeed. For those who are looking to apply for 2017, I would suggest getting some experience either through clin tech/CNA job or volunteering. I've been a volunteer in a post partum unit for 1 1/2 years and it's been a great experience. Getting the experience now will also help you feel more comfortable once you get to your clinicals.
A word of warning-we have had 8 people either not pass or drop out due to the courseload. One was admitted to the Honor's society, but she was trying to work, take care of her family and keep up in class. That's just too much for anyone. I only know one person in our class that has worked throughout this program and that is only because they were allowed to switch from a tech position to a unit secretary. Don't not expect to hold down a job. If you have a family, start thinking now about how you can get everyone to work together now to make life easier, i.e. older kids and hubbies can help make dinners, everyone can help keep the house clean.
One thing that surprised me was the amount of writing we have in this program. You will be writing weekly journals-many of the instructors require article references to be included. You will also have papers, care plans and discussion board posts. This semester 1 of the 3 classes has 16 writing assignments-14 of which require a minimum of 3 journal references.
Good luck! It's a little crazy at times but well worth it.

It should be searchable... I have the privacy settings set to public. here is the link to the group so you can find it more easily.
