GMU ABSN program 2017 applicants

U.S.A. Virginia

Hello, everyone!

I am a prospective student for the GMU ABSN program for 2017. I am working on completing my A&P I and II before applying in January. I have already have a BA in Psychology from GMU. My overall GPA was not great due to an undiagnosed chronic illness that left me with many incompletes that I couldn't get done. But my last 50 or so credits were all As and I was on the Dean's List every semester. I don't know if it will help me at all to be an alumna or not. I am an older student (35 yrs old) and I have three little girls. My older two are already in elementary school and my youngest will eligible for Pre-K by the time the program starts if I'm accepted. I'm a little intimidated by the 1 year, intensive program. Anyone else thinking about applying for the same program? Any advice from those who have already started or completed it? Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I am also applying to GMU, but to the traditional program. I just saw the topics for the essay and video and I agree with you Quota, it will be hard to write a lot about it. I expected for it to be a different type of essay topic, oh well. I am also so nervous to take the hesi exam next week.

Took my HESI A2 today, 93.2% overall, could have done a bit better but I'm happy enough with my score. Now just have to write my essay and make my video.

I am currently a Mason student. So I did really bad in the Hesi. I got a 84.80%. My worst was the anatomy which I got a 72% in. So my grade in A&P 1 was A- and an A in A&P 2. Micro A, all A in my prerequisite and core classss except for Bioethics which I got a B+. My GPA is 3.9, nursing GPA 3.8. I am a minority student. What are my chances of getting in Mason nursing.

I think you'd be able to get in. There were people with lower hesi's that got it to my cohort. Your gpa is good so it leverages it a bit- just put effort into your essay and video

Really?? Cause I'm really stressed right now. So do the fact that I'm a minority play a difference at all.

Really? That makes me slightly better. I am so stressed and nervous. Do the fact that I'm a minority make a difference?

Well, I'm not on the admissions committee so I don't know. I know a few people were waitlisted and and did get in with a lower hesi and GPA. GMU is also big on diversity so it's possible that it'll help.

Hey all,

I'm applying all the way out from California to the 2017 ABSN at GMU! Just finished up my pre reqs this past semester and will be taking the HESI next week. I was also a little surprised by the essay topic, my answer is pretty simple as well. Quick question for those of you who have completed the University transfer application already- how soon after you began the application did you receive your G#? I will be submitting my transfer application in the next few days but want to make sure I do not run into a time crunch come mid January

I got my G# in less than 48 hours from starting my transfer app. I still need to send them official transcripts but everything else is done.

Hope2Nurse2017, I am also a current ABSN student at Mason. My GPA for my first degree in biology was pretty low (just under a 3.0), although my course load was very challenging (2 semesters of ochem, 2 semesters of physics, 2 semesters of calc, lots of advanced biology classes, you get the point). As someone else mentioned you can make up for a low undergraduate GPA by getting all A's in the prerequisites (or close to it), and by getting a high score on the hesi A2 exam (I had a 94%). Its good that you completed both semesters of A&P before applying...the more prerequisites you complete by the time your application is due, the better. My advice to you is to remember show a little bit of your personality in the video interview...that's your chance to show them what you can't on your transcripts and other documents. Believe it or not, in the field of nursing, a high value is placed on a person who has an upbeat, energetic, and balanced nature. I think I talked about my work and academic experience for the first part of my video and then ended by showing some of my artwork (I paint) and talking about my other hobbies and interests. Just a thought! As for the intensity for the program, I have found it to be very time consuming (which is to be expected) but I have not had trouble getting work done on time or succeeding in the program. The professors are attentive and helpful and and you'll have your fellow students to lean on as well....if you have the desire to succeed you will! Good luck!!!

Soccergod, I'm a current student in Masons ABSN program. You have a good chance of still getting in. Your undergraduate GPA is excellent (alot higher than mine was) as is your prerequisite GPA. I wouldn't give up based on a few less than ideal scores, I definitely had some weak points on my transcripts as did many of my classmates. Just put a lot of effort into your video and essay and get all your documents in on time! Best of luck :)

GMU essay prompt: Scenario: You are finishing up your shift and are about to grab your things, when all the sudden a patient begs you for one final request before you leave. You have an appointment in 1 hour that you cannot miss. The dilemma is that the request can take 30 seconds or 30 minutes. You won't know which unless you decide to hear her request. What would you do and why?

any idea on what to do
