Glucose tolerance test

I had another one today. I had one while pregnant but don't remember this happening, and my nurse brain was not functioning today. I fasted since midnight, went in this morning and had the baseline drawn and drank the dexicola *shudder* at about 0950. Went back two hours later and had the second level drawn, then went home. I had my youngest with me so we decided to go to McD's and to the park. Got to the park about 1300 and my hands were shaking so bad I could hardly hold a french fry!! I came down hard!!!

I think the first time I had it done I ate as soon as the second draw was done so I didn't feel it. It was weird!!!! Now I have even more sympathy for my diabetics who come in with low levels.

I just had my first one last week. I don't ever want another! I kept it down but it sure made me sick! I stick IVs in patients all day long, teach others, offer my hands/arms to the newbies to practice on... I don't have a problem with needles... When she was done drawing my blood I couldn't convince my head of that, I nearly passed out! I was so embarrassed! Thankfully they had some food by the lab they were willing to share with me (they had just had a potluck and had leftovers.) After some protein and veggies I felt much better.

I had one during my first pregnancy and had the same thing happen. It was a 3-hour test.

Nobody told me to go eat right away!!

Sweaty, shaky, and could not get enough to eat. I think I ate two full lunches and still did not feel full.

Hypoglycemia is miserable.

Oh yeah, I polished off a value meal and my daughter's chicken nuggets that she decided she didn't want........I practically inhaled it!

I had the first one done around Halloween so there was candy in the department. As soon as the second level was drawn I started in on that so never felt the nosedive.

i have never had one...usually my fasting blood sugar is in acceptable ranges but my triglycerides are sky high..i was thinking about having this done because i am overweight and scared to death of dm

does that stuff really taste as bad as everyone says??

Get the orange flavored one, it tastes like orange soda. Better over ice. I had the cola one today and I will never take that one again. I'd rather have a warm orange one than the cola one again. The lab was out of orange today.

I had this test done many yrs ago (maybe 8?) i think cause i had gained weight and family hx of DM and it was absolutely the worst thing ive gone thru. it tasted so bad, i almost couldnt finish it and to this day i cannot drink orange soda....so when i got pregnant i told my doc flat out i would not do it, i knew there had to be a better way. luckily (i suppose) my mom tests her glucose level for type 2 and so i borrowed her machine and tested every day, 3 times a day for like a month i think. it was so worth it not to have that 1 three hr test. there is absolutely no way i will ever do that again, never ever. just thinking of the orange drink right now is makin me a little queazy!

Given the choice between the glucose drink and gastrografin, I'd take the glucose again.

I don't remember that it was bad, exactly, just very very sweet. Of course it's been almost 22 years, my memory could be faulty.

I know how you feel---not from the gtt, tho; I'm diabetic, & every so often, my sugars get too low & I have those hypoglycemic symptoms!!! I don't think ANYTHING feels worse!!!

No, I just had it done today. I'm on admin leave so I'm not even there to call the lab and whisper a request for the results from anyone. I have an appt with the doc on the 30th.

I have felt hungry before and have gotten headaches from not eating, but I have never felt what I did today. I'm just glad it didn't happen while I was driving and I realized right away what was happening.

speaking of gastrograffin, did you know you can mix gastrograffin with any noncarbonated beverage, not just water??? many patients tell me that it is quite palatable in apple juice or fruit punch, and now I REFUSE to mix it in plain h2o...
