:typing Hi everyone!! Im applying to GCC nursing program this fall 2009. I have heard that its very competitive and was wondering if anyone could tell me what they got on there HESI exam, which got them into the program? The minimum that they need just to apply is 75%, I got an 81% and am concerned that my average will not be high enough to secure me a spot for the fall. Any insight is appreciated!! Congratulations to all who are currently enrolled in the nursing program and good luck to all those who are applying!
Sincerely Thank you

hi everyone!I have a quick question or 2 about the HESI... I'm applying to the GCC program this year and I am quite nervous about this exam!! I only have one chance, and a B in A&P II (unfortunately I have to submit my most recent grade, A&P I was better) so I hope I do okay... anyone know the odds of getting in with a B?? Anyway...
For the Chemistry section, do you need to know the periodic table by heart??? It seems like a lot of the review questions ask about the elements and their atomic number/mass in some sort of equation. Also, is there much on the test about Stoichiometry (balancing the equations, mole-to-mole ratio) I can't seem to understand it fully at all!
I take this test Thursday and am more nervous then I was at my high school SAT :)
Any advice/ comforting words??? haha thanks so much!
You need to score as high as you possibly can because of that B. I am not trying to discourage you, because people DO get in with Bs, but competition is so stiff that you'll need to be pretty outstanding on your HESI. Remember, they put everyone's numbers into an Excel spreadsheet, and out pops the people who get in. That's pretty much it, since there are no interviews or letters of recommendation.
Unfortunately, this is your last time to take the test, because you have to wait 60 days to take it again, and that would bring you past the March 6 deadline.
So read what everyone has said on this thread, breathe deeply, relax and TAKE YOUR TIME. You have 5 hours, which is way more than most people need.
You absolutely do NOT need to know the periodic table by heart! But yes, there are questions about stoichiometry. No really tough questions, but you definitely need to know how to balance a fairly simple equation. Also, review the properties of water in the study guide, and know how to do a simple density calculation, given mass and volume.
If Chem is your weak spot, I'd advise you save it for last so that you don't get hung up on one problem and run out of time. Do the stuff you find easy first so that you can feel confident when you do the other parts.
For the bio, review organelle structure and function, as well as DNA replication. (See my posts above.)
Good luck!
Thanks so much! That really helps... the study guide seems soooo broad and general and a lot of consumer reviews on the study guide seem negative about how it prepares you. I've been looking at sparknotes (as mentioned previously) and I am becoming a little more confident. Chemistry is definitely my weakness. It's been 8 years since I took chemistry, and back then, I didn't enjoy it too much either :) I seem confident about everything except so chemistry so I guess I will put my focus there! Thanks again!
Well, I took the HESI.... I am SOOOO glad it is over. I got an 87 overall... I can't get any more "middle of the road" than that! I have no idea if that is even good enough which is the frustrating part. Problem is, I only got an 80.8 on the reading comp.... not good at all That part I thought was the trickiest! They put in answers that sound great, but aren't correct...oh well, I cant do much about it. :)
Well I only took it once... maybe my post was a bit confusing...
I got an 87 overall and an 80 for reading comprehension, both of which need to be submitted for admission to the nursing program at GCC. Unfortunately I cant take it again because I have to wait 60 days, which would be after the deadline for portfolio submission. I agree with everyone else, Sparknotes was helpful :) honestly, I would do reading comp first. I waited on that test and when it came time to take it, my brain was mush and it was very difficult for me to get through the passages. Math was easy, I got a 100. So was grammer (96) unless those are trouble area for you, I woulnt spend study time on them.
But thanks on the congrats for the 87!! :) hopefully that 80 in read comp doesnt mess it up for me
good luck!
Thanks ashmac1 for your honest response. Im positive that you'll get into the program with those scores, assuming you got an A in your science course that your applying with. WOW your first try and an 87%, that is fantastic!!! Reading Comp was difficult for me too, although an 80% is great and will def get you into the program (dont worry) I totally thought it was going to be easy but the answers were so confusing that I actally remember thinking these answers can not be for the passage I just read...lol.
Thanks for your help and advice...Congrats again!
I know!!! The reading comp seemed like they were "trick questions"!! I always got it narrowed down to 2 obvious answers and then guessed. Oh and I didnt get an A, I got a B in A&PII..... that is why I am so nervous about getting into the program I guess. Thanks for the encouragement though! It definitely makes me feel better.
I went to the info session they held tonight and the room was packed! I wonder if every info session is like that :)
