I recently delivered my son at the hospital where I work. I could not have asked for a better birthing experience. I would really like to get my L&D and my nurse midwife a gift. I feel that they truly helped make this experience more than I ever imagined it could be. I know that as a hospital employy we can not except gift cards so any other ideas on what I could get for her? I also embarassingly do not remember her name although in my defense I was 8cm when we met lol, I wanted to write a letter to her supervisor comending her for the excellent care she provided would it be appropriate to ask the supervisor for her name so when I decide on a gift I can ensure that she gets it? I had also thought of nominating her for one of the awards our hospital offers for excellent care.

The nurse midwife does not work for the hospital so I'm assumed is not bound by the same limitations, any ideas on a nice gift I could get for her?

Hi,

It is also unacceptable for nurses to accept gifts at my hospital. I letter would be great.

Also, one patient that we had made a donation to our education fund. That was ok'd by the bosses.

I am so tired about all this. We are usually talking about tokens of gratitude, not new cars. We are not talking about solicitations, but grateful patients and families.

The clinic I attend has posted a notice stating that they cannot accept any type of gifts including food of any kind.

So, send a letter to the CEO of the facility, with a copy to the nurse's suoervisor.

As for the midwife, is that a private contract between you? You can give a bonus.

Weall have to follow our employer's policy on receiving gifts. I worked in a place where we were allowed to accept gifts as long as the value was less than $25. I've worked in places where accepting any gift (unless it is a gift of food for the entire unit) was grounds for termination.

When family members or residents ask me now what they can get for the staff, I tell them a letter with copies to the Administrator is great and if they want to do more...pizza for the unit or some other kind of food.

I think a handwritten thank you note is a professional and classy way to express your gratitude. A handwritten note is a heartfelt and a rare from of communication these days. Everyone appreciates a "pat on the back" from time to time. :heartbeat

I always took a basket of goodies to L&D after I delivered my babies: muffins, bagels, fruit, etc. They always got excited to see them, so hopefully it wasn't a violation of any policy!!

Nothing wrong with some candy/snacks/food provided it isn't against your company's policy. Or even hand made little trinkets. But I do see a problem with accepting cash. We already get paid to provide the service we give. Cash is not necessary.

Our policy is if food is given, we thank them and place it in the break room. Something about OSHA and eating at the nurses station.

I am gifted a pack of gum by a patient's family, at exactly 1215 every Saturday. There's no refusing, haha.

I was also gifted a tiny dog figurine, when I tried to refuse, the lady began to cry... so I took it and it rides the med cart when I am at work now. XD

The gum was probably a message...
