Getting rid of student loan-Loan Forgiveness-New York

Published

Has any one gotten rid of the majority of their nursing loans yet? Or plan to? Are you aware of any Loan Forgiveness programs in New York City?

You're kidding right? "Loan forgiveness" program??? Why would you not plan to pay back your loans? You want to be responsible for the lives of others but you can't be responsible enough to pay your own debts??? Step up and be responsible for your actions...Regardless of your personal circumstances.

I offer no apologies for getting up on a soapbox and being blunt.

Wow that seems a bit harsh. It is the same question everyone else has been asking forever. The same with getting sign on bonuses etc. Being responsible for someone else's health has nothing to do with getting out of debt.

To the OP, I don't know of any programs, but you might want to post in the New York forum. Maybe someone there can help you.

I know that some hospitals have given new employees bonuses towards their student loans. I just don't know them offhand (especially in New York). But, WorkingTheStreets, just because the OP is hoping to find a position that would help pay off some of the loans doesn't mean they are being "irresponsible". It just means they are trying to find a job that has good benefits. S/he didn't say "I am not gunna pay my loans otherwise".

The tuition at the school I'll be attending is $33,000 per year. The class size is about 80 (Spring cohort, 120 in Fall). That is a lot of money, especially considering a community college would be about $6,000. If I can find 'forgiveness' programs when I graduate, I'll try to work with them. It is no different than looking for a job that pays better or has other good benefits.

My boyfriend, a PhD, received an NIH grant that paid off about half of his debt. If an option is out there, I say go with it. I'm just sorry I don't have any suggestions for jaja1234.

The only place in the city I can think of is the VA Hospital system. Other places may give you a sign on bonus that you can put toward loans, though.

Workin--loan forgiveness isn't the same as defaulting on student loans. If someone can find an employer willing to include loan forgiveness in the compensation package, it can be a great option.

Hey folks, getting a position that has a sign on bonus or some other program that provides money one can use to repay a loan is one thing...which is a good thing if you can find it. Walking away from the loans is another story. I read the post as to mean walking away from the loans...If that was not the intent, then I am wrong.

WorkinTheStreets... Loan Forgiveness benefit is not walking away from student loans for one thing. It is an added bonus to any position. It is comparable to tuition reimbursement. I earned my degree, just like physicians earn their degree and also have many opportunities for loan forgiveness. I will be a great nurses so if the hospital that I choose to work for has an option such as loan forgiveness I will take advantage of it.

And for your information loan burden is why a majority of students join the military. Loans are a heavy burden.

Thank you others for your intelligent feedback. :)

There is a federal program that does offer nursing student loan forgiveness for working in certain "under served" communities for a specific period of time. Same with Teacher Student Loan Forgivness Programs.

Do a search on Nursing Student Loan Forgivness on google and you'll find the criteria.

Workin the streets, your comment was way out of line. You have no idea what circumstances people are in and why they have to take out loans. They offer loan forgiveness for reasons; nothing to do with how we take care of our patients. People make sacrifices every day and the government sees that which is why programs like these are offered. That is the rudest comment i have ever read on here. I make no apologies for being blunt

I say check with the VA...I have heard that they offer good loan forgiveness programs. They will also pay for your graduate school tuition if you decide to pursue that.

There is also the federal program another poster mentioned...I think it's HRSA or something? You have to work in an underserved area...I once checked into it, but there are no facilities in my area (the website has a list of facilities).

Ask around to friends that are recently graduated...they can tell you what their hospital offers b/c the hospitals don't always advertise it.

Good luck to you!

There are also opportunities for health care providers to receive loan forgiveness with IHS (Indian Health Services). Here's the link: http://www.ihs.gov/jobscareerdevelop/DHPS/LRP/lrpsc.asp

Good luck! :)

You really need to read before you comment! Nothing in the OP stated walking away from any loans??? Hopefully you wouldn't treat any pts like this!!!:nono:
