Hello All-
I have just started looking into applying to Nursing Schools. I have a long way to go but I wanted to get the process started as soon as possible. I am VERY interested in NYU Accelerated Nursing Program for Fall 2010 and I have a few questions. I would love feedback from anyone who was accepted into the program or planning on applying.
1. I graduated undergrad in business with a mere 2.8 GPA. If I get A's in all my prerequisites what are my chances of getting into NYU Accelerated Program? (My first year of college before I transferred I had a 3.3 GPA- don't know if this even makes a difference). What else can I do to increase my chances of getting accepted?
2. Is it more advantageous to apply for spring semester over fall semester?
3. I am very interested in later utilizing my Business degree/background with Nursing. What are my options?
4. I received a C in Statistic from undergrad- should I just retake the course?
Hope to hear from you guys soon.
Thanks!
Hi Everyone,
I applied for Fall 2010 accelerated program as well and am so nervous. I applied for Columbia's ETP program (which is the entry to masters program if you already have a bachelors degree in another discipline) and was rejected, so I realize how competitive getting into a nursing program can be.
I learned thought, that rejection is hard, but you must not let this deter you from applying again or to other schools. When I received the rejection from Columbia, I was heart broken because I worked so hard (3.88 undergrad, 1200 combined GRE score, all A's on my pre-reqs, so I don't know where I went wrong), but it certainly will not stop me! You all have invested so much time into these pre-reqs, don't turn back!
With that said...I will be waiting on pins and needles like you guys...so let's all pray for each other!! :)

did u apply for columbia's nov deadline?!!! thats insane! Why would u get rejected? Where did u do ur bachelors? I am doing my bachelors at CU now. I didnt apply bc the program starts in the summer? right? and i have not completed my pre reqs. thats so weird!!! Sorry to hear that. I am hopefull u will get in NYU
Hi aspiring_nurse,
I would have started Columbia's program this summer had I been accepted. I was notified mid-Feb of non-acceptance When they reject you, the vanilla-reason is "competitive applicant pool" so it doesn't tell you much. I can speculate though, that it must have been due to my undergrad institution (I received a bachelors in business at DeVry, which brings to mind 'online-university' i suppose) and my personal statement and maybe lack of volunteer work or relevant experience. I feel my personal statement was not strong enough, in retrospect. It didn't give the admissions board enough about ME. It didn't tell a good 'story' of who I am and why I would be a good nurse. The one thing that is important to remember is that your personal statement/essays and recommendation letters are the opportunities for you to SHOW THEM who you are, why you are different, and to give your application some LIFE. Also, like you, I didn't have any relevant experience and something like volunteering at a hospital would have shown more commitment in exploring the nursing field, etc.
It's really hard to say what they are looking for...you can only try to do your best to show them who you are!
Anyway, I applied to southern california schools and NYU is the only other out-of-state school I'm considering. The application process is a very emotional/stressful rollercoaster ride, but I keep telling myself to be positive!!
:)
Hey CAhopeful09, I know how you feel. I was also rejected from Columbia, my first choice, and I have NO idea why... I had a 3.96 GPA from a widely known state school, 1200+ GREs, lots and lots of relevant medical volunteer experience, and stellar reccommendations (I was told this by an interviewer at another school I applied to). I also worked really, really hard on my essays... I was absolutely CRUSHED when I found out I didn't get in. I received the email while I was at work and I spent the rest of the day in my cubicle trying to hide my tears from my coworkers... Maybe I didn't get accepted because I applied to the ultra-competitive Anesthesia track?? But still, I heard they consider you for another specialty if they don't accept you for Anesthesia... But no, they completely threw out my app. Not even waitlisted... Why, Columbia, why?
The other schools I applied to are U. Miami, NYU, and Yale. So far only accepted to Yale for the Acute Care specialty but I would rather go to NYU since I currently live in Manhattan and don't want to move. And I think I'm going to get rejected from Miami because I just realized I don't have the Anatomy Laboratory pre-req.
When do we hear back from NYU??? Does anyone know officially? The website seems to say multiple things.
I applied for the NYU accelerated nursing program. My gpa is a 3.0 and I have a BA in psychology. Howeverm they told me that I have to take nutrition before the start of the semester. Should i take it online? Is so what school? Or should i just take a summer course at a cheap Community College or something? Please Help

Priority dead line is March 1st. But you don't have to send in everything by then, just make sure your application is submitted through internet. However they will not look at your application until all of your supplemental materials are in!!! So make sure you send in everything. You have to realize that it's not a rolling in admission, and thousands do apply, so try not to delay on the application process. I know it's kinda painful and annoying to get everything together, good luck all! Oh, contact Lindsey Sutton, she is really really great!
