Getting into NYU Accelerated Nursing Program

Hello All-

I have just started looking into applying to Nursing Schools. I have a long way to go but I wanted to get the process started as soon as possible. I am VERY interested in NYU Accelerated Nursing Program for Fall 2010 and I have a few questions. I would love feedback from anyone who was accepted into the program or planning on applying.

1. I graduated undergrad in business with a mere 2.8 GPA. If I get A's in all my prerequisites what are my chances of getting into NYU Accelerated Program? (My first year of college before I transferred I had a 3.3 GPA- don't know if this even makes a difference). What else can I do to increase my chances of getting accepted?

2. Is it more advantageous to apply for spring semester over fall semester?

3. I am very interested in later utilizing my Business degree/background with Nursing. What are my options?

4. I received a C in Statistic from undergrad- should I just retake the course?

@lib77 - Congrats on getting your app in! I'm applying for FALL 2010 and the pressure is definitely on. To answer your questions, I'm actually still an undergrad but I will graduate in May 2010 in California. My GPA is actually up in the air since I haven't gotten finals back yet (they were brutal so this can seriously go up or doooown) but my pre-req grades are as follows: Anatomy-B, Physiology-B, Nutrition-A, Developmental Psych-A, Chemistry-B, Statistics-B, and I'll be taking Microbiology next semester.

@McSweetiepie - It shouldn't matter since most schools usually understand that not all the pre-reqs are offered at universities. I've taken all of mine at the community college as well, and a couple of them were accelerated (i.e 3-weeks but still considered an entire semester's worth of work, if we're talking about the same thing?).

@iheartnyc - Great questions! I was checking the website and they really didn't have any stats listed. But I was looking through another NYU student forum and I found these stats posted by @elleNY:

"To answer a few questions -

- You can study abroad during winter intersession in either Florence or Buenos Aires...at a cost, of course.

- There are about 200 students in each class from what I know, combination of aBSN and traditional, although mostly the former.

- Clinicals all over the New York City area, including the boroughs.

- Cost of attendance, NOT INCLUDING housing, comes to around $70,000. The dorms run from $13,000-$18,000 per YEAR, if you choose NYU housing. There are a few (maybe like four or five) scholarships but the highest one only grants 18 thousand but with some strings attached. There are three others that offer around $10,000..."

Perhaps the only thing relevant to your question though was the class of 200 mentioned above but nothing about in or out of state.

I have to say that it's nice to know that there are so many people out there who are going through the same app process as I am! I'm going to try and email their admissions office to see about some of these short answer questions...

Question: It sounds like schools will look pretty highly upon recs from your pre-req profs. If you have recs from uh non-req profs, does this not look as good?

So, you already got into the FALL 2010 program? I'm applying to start then too (also already have my BA) but thought I probably wouldn't know if I was admitted until mid April. Confused but encouraged...you may know somethin' I don't, and if so....please share...am super-nervous! Thanks!!! :)

I just got accepted into the NYU program and am set to start in the Fall. So unfortunately I can't give you any real insight as of yet but its a good thing you're starting to think about this stuff early on!

Hey, since you are in I was wondering what you thought about my chances. 2.8 sociology major at Colb Univ. and 3.5 prereqs gpa. How were ur extra curriculars? anything you recommend? I am also interested in the Fall 2010 accelerated program. Can you get accepted without completing pre reqs? Ill be missing nutrition. please let me know whoever has been accepted without all the prereqs.

i think you have a good chance of getting in. i had a 3.3 undergrad in anthro and a 3.5 in prereqs. i even had a C in chemistry. so i would recommend working on your essays they are a little intense. i also worked at a community clinic for a 1yr which i think helped. good luck. i think you have a chance.

@NYUfall2010 - That's a question that I've been wondering about as well! I finished up the essay questions that concern nursing, but the prompts about movies and poems..well, I have drafts written for those but they really do sound terrible. I don't think they will put as much emphasis on those but since it's NYU, I'm not exactly sure what to expect. I don't want to sound unoriginal or cheesy in my essays.

As for your grades, it looks like you have a serious chance of getting in :).

Does anybody have any insight on the essays? Is there anybody reading those essays on movies and poems or should we not worry about those as much?

Hi! Seems like I know a little about an essay.... I did not visit their open house... What did they tell about it? What is movies and poems part? And what are short answers questions? ...... S.O.S. ..............................

Hi all! Congrats to those of you accepted or already attending! I hope to join the Fall 2010 cohort and submitted my application a couple of weeks ago. Of course I am having tons of anxiety.. I was hoping someone could shed some light on my chances of getting in.

My stats: I have a BS in Journalism from the University of Colorado with a mere 3.2 GPA. My pre-req grades are as follows: A's in Chemistry, Statistics, Developmental Psych, Anatomy & Physiology I, B in Nutrition (since I took this during my first bach years ago and was not the committed student I am today). Micro and Anatomy & Physiology II are in progress, but I expect to do well.

I have two kick-butt recs (one from a former boss and one from my A&P professor). I've done quite a bit of volunteering (hospital, South African orphanage, SPCA, Holiday volunteering at homeless mission). I am freaking out. I know this is quite possibly THE most competitive program since everyone wants to go to NYU. Any insight? Honesty is definitely appreciated!

Or, are there any ideas on how I could boost my application at this point to show them how interested/passionate I am?

Hey Aly1981! I'm not sure what you could do now, since you've already submitted your application, but it sounds like you'll be fine based on your GPA, volunteer work, etc..... I've heard that rec letters are pretty important too, so the fact that you've dubbed yours "kick-butt" tells me you'll have no problem. If you're looking for stats....I've been told that avg acceptance rate is 25-30% but hesitate to share those figures, as they are pretty intimidating. And, as a friend so eloquently put it to me, when I told him about my new-found doubt in re: to the those slim acceptance rates (and I quote him directly) : "what that got to do with YOU?" Good luck! (though I'm pretty sure you won't need it!)

I attended an Open House and they touched on the topic regarding short answers/haiku/etc. Basically, YES, you must complete those sections, and YES, someone DOES read how you answered them. As far as how they function in the app process, I wouldn't be freaking out over it, but I think it's important to spend your energy answering as well as you can rather than trying to figure out why they're asking you those questions in the first place. I'm sure they have their reasons, and even if they didn't, it doesn't change the fact that it's part of what's required for application. So, relax, and do the best you can!

hey iheartnyc! thanks for the kind words. i guess we're in the same boat.. waiting for Fall 2010 acceptance? i'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us. i think we'll be waiting until mid-april or so from what i've heard. ahhhhh.

quick question.. do you think i'm at a disadvantage because i'm in the process of taking 2 of the most important prereq courses (micro and a&p II)? i'm just wondering if i should have waited to apply for spring 2011 for a better shot? the acceptance rate is definitely not encouraging, but i like your attitude :)
