Hi All,
I just want to know what I need to do to get a job as an ER Tech in DFW. I have applied to so many positions and have had one telephone interview but no job. I am very familiar with the Emergency Department. I have volunteered in an Adult Level 1 Trauma center for over 2 years, and I volunteered in a Pediatric Level 1 Trauma center for over a year. I currently work in the Emergency Department as a Clinical Researcher, the only job I could get in an ER, but I would like direct patient contact. I am a certified EMT-B, and looking to pursue a career in nursing. I volunteer at a free clinic in Dallas where I have direct patient contact and utilize many critical thinking skills.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get the job? Any ideas would be wonderful.
Thank you all in advance...
Yes! Nurse Extern is the same as a tech they just give you the title of Nurse Extern because of enrollment in nursing school. Basically I will transport pts, do cpr on coding pts, draw blood, cath pts, collect vitals and some charting. When i did my prehire paperwork just had to give a transcript of my grades, sign my papers about my role and how much my pay will be. Oh, I also took my ID pic.
I wanted to update everyone on how I'm doing. I went to HR today to officially accept the position and sign the necessary paperwork. Then I was escorted to Occupational Health for my pre-employment screening (Vaccination verification, drug screen, TB Skin Test, Mask Fit Test, etc.). The last thing, I was given a packet to review before Orientation on the 29th. I'm nervous and excited at the same time! This will be my last post regarding Getting the Job.
*If you would like to follow my ER Tech journey, I will be creating a new thread called "My Journey from ER Tech to ER Nurse".
Thank you guys for all of the support and encouragement you have given me. I am very grateful to have this community to give and receive valuable advice. Not everyone on here is BAD.
I apologize for hijacking this post, did not feel the need to crowd the board with simil topic. After all my complaining and crying in the corner thing's, knock on wood and any other good luck methods, received a phone call for an interview next Monday as an ER Tech. Well kind of it is a really awesome role and kind of and still holding my breath of getting it.
It is a ER Tech within the Emergency psychiatric department plus you are a security guard in addition to the position. Ha it is called safety associate. I have five year's experience in healthcare, three in behavioral health, three year's in emergency service's as a volunteer, and a year in the OR as a tech. However, the job requires you to have or be certified as an EMT B within year of hiring date. I always wanted to go for my EMT certification but full time work took up most of my time.
Now I worried will be past over this job after the interview. Any tips or ways to prepare myself to shine out at this interview. They asked me about pay I said somewhere between $30,000 to $35,000...thinking $15 to $16 an hour seems reasonable.
Appreciate any feedback
You're more than welcome to post.
I'm not really sure where you're from but down here in Texas, ER Techs start out at around $10-$14 depending on experience and hospital you're working for.
I just started the job and attended general hospital orientation yesterday so there's not that much I can tell you.
Wow you're gonna be in psych ER? Have fun you'll hear lots of crazy stories.
Your past experiences in behavioral health and ems should help your file out. Just mention that you are eager to learn anything and everything if accepted. Do some research about the company and department. Let them know your time line for obtaining your emt-b.
I got the job out of luck. There were multiple people who applied who I felt were more qualified than me. I'm an EMT-B with no prior EMS or Hospital Patient Care experience. I do have my ACLS, PALS, and PHTLS though. I don't know if that helped my case or not. I'm also a nursing student. I have thought about going to medic school because in DFW, a job that asks for EMT as a minimum really wants a Paramedic for the job. I still will after nursing school.
Appreciate the feedback. I believe it is associated with another hospital. If so would make the ER a level 1 trauma center and I'd the hub of our states emergency air services...so ha a bit nervous. Worried I took the EMT right after I took the EMR. I passed the Practical, but took the written exam twice struggled. I figure I can take the class late spring. I like the idea of a time line. The other thing that makes me nervous is I have a lot of intervention and restraint certifications of patients. However, do not have the one they are asking for. Have to refresh myself on my acronyms from my EMT go over the book this week.

@PurpleLover: That's awesome. Is a nurse extern the same thing as an ED tech? I'm really excited to be learning as I work in the ED.
@tasha92337: My starting salary is in the mid-teens before shift diffs. And that's without experience, which kind of surprised me.
