Getting a Job as an ER Tech

Nursing Students Technicians

Published

Hi All,

I just want to know what I need to do to get a job as an ER Tech in DFW. I have applied to so many positions and have had one telephone interview but no job. I am very familiar with the Emergency Department. I have volunteered in an Adult Level 1 Trauma center for over 2 years, and I volunteered in a Pediatric Level 1 Trauma center for over a year. I currently work in the Emergency Department as a Clinical Researcher, the only job I could get in an ER, but I would like direct patient contact. I am a certified EMT-B, and looking to pursue a career in nursing. I volunteer at a free clinic in Dallas where I have direct patient contact and utilize many critical thinking skills.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get the job? Any ideas would be wonderful.

Thank you all in advance...

Your welcome and thank you very much!!! Put your best foot forward and let the journey begin :)

I want to update everyone again.

I just finished an interview with a local hospital's ED Director and believe that I did a great job of answering their questions and I also think I nailed the interview. The Director and I connected easily and she liked that fact that I was young and knew what I wanted to do in life. We started talking about working at her facility and the expectations. She mentioned training days and introduced me to her staff members. I hope I'm not jinxing things.

I hope that I get this job because I know I will excel in this position.

Thanks everyone for their support!

awesome! keep us posted =)

Have you considered volunteering as an EMT-B? I know some ER jobs have specified "at least" a certain amount of months/years with patient care experience in the field, and it's a great way to get some hands on patient care as an EMT-B to add to a resume. I'm not sure what is offered in terms of training in other states, but I was able to take a "PCT" course which encompassed three certifications: CNA, EKG and Phlebotomy and I'm sure that helped me stand out over others who did not have the training prior to hire for my job as an ER technician. Good luck, I hope you find something!

I received an email from Human Resources regarding my job application and they told me that a final decision will be made in mid-December on who they are going to hire because they are still conducting interviews. I was one of the first people to get an interview. What does this mean? Am I still in the pool to possibly be hired or have I lost my chance?

Will having a CNA, EKG, or Phleb really help me get the job? I don't want to waste money taking classes when I will learn those skill-sets in Nursing school. I know how to perform all of the functions of a CNA and CMA and know how to obtain and read EKGs. I am ACLS and PALS certified. I do CMA/CNA duties already for the free clinic I volunteer at weekly. I don't have real experience with Phleb other than an IV arm.

Specializes in NICU, Trauma, Oncology.

It means you have a chance but at this juncture I wouldn't spend more money because they are going to evaluate you based on what you have already provided them.

Doing CNA duties may be sufficient or it may not be depends on whether they want someone certified by the state or not. If they like your application and you are otherwise the best qualified they will give you a timeframe to become certified in any of the things that require it.

I'm a CNA. It took me 6 months to get a job in the ER. It was per diem because the regular hours were given to an internal candidate. And in the meantime it opened the door to an ICU job that I have normal hours at. I can still go back to ER for per diem. They have trained me on ekgs, blood sugars and etc. In the ER they teach you to draw blood. So keep the faith. If they want to invest in someone they really will. I'm grateful I have a hospital job. I'm soaking up as much as I can! :)

Normally where I am they say EMT B but take a Medic. The hospitals for the ER here want a Basic to come in with phlebotomy skills.

I just wanted to update everyone on here. I got the phone call earlier today extending me a job offer. I'm so excited. Question what is the average pay for a PCT?

Awesome! Please keep us posted. I'm not sure what the PCT pay in your area. I recently had a job interview for a CNA per diem position at a Trauma /Pediatric center and had to turn it down due to my upcoming LVN program schedule. I did thank the interviewer for his time and even told him if I can stay in touch for any changes of my school schedule. He said sure. I also mailed a Thank You note to him. I will follow up in 3 months.

The pay was $13.68.

I am a Nurse extern in the ER and i got the job because my clinical instructor was an ER nurse and my professor wrote me an amazing letter of recommendation!
