how to get into nursing school ufv

Published

Hi I am currently trying to get into the BSN program at UFV and was wondering if anyone had any advice on what it takes for grades and volunteer experience to get in. I have heard how competitive it is and that you almost have to have straight As!

I was also wondering if anyone had any advice on the interview!:) I am very nervous but excited at the same time.

wow congrats guys :) I have a friend who got in for september as well, she got her letter yesterday :)

Hi Ladies,

curious what type of volunteer hours and grades you had to get in? CONGRATS!! You must have been so excited to read the news!! It really seems to be all over the page as I'm reading this site. Maybe looking a lot at personality and financial/emotional support? I def don't have a super high GPA..solid B student. This site has been really great for information!

I was a solid B student, had hours as a candy striper, I was also a pharmacy tech (Pharmacy trained, no schooling), and i worked for a chiropractor, had over 600 hours.

They have certain points for certain things, such as... like 10 points for volunteer hours, 10 points for essay, 10 points for interview, 10 points for grades.. etc. i know they arent all weighed equally, i believe grades have only a 6 point weight, so its not all about the grades.

not sure if it has changed since 2009,... im almost done the program...

Thanks for all the info Sarah...Im also a B student...I have only 100 volunteer hours. I work in a pharmacy @ a hospital...wonder if I should get a ref letter from employer? I will be working as a Pharmacy tech also, with just training soon. Before this I also worked at another pharmacy for 3 years . Are ref letters from employers even looked at? Just because Pharmacy...prob wouldn't count I'm guessing? Just trying to bump up my application! How do you like the program? Has it been a challenge? Im so excited but a little scared also! I know someone at UFV now with a year left and she is loving it!

Thanks!

Hi rae. I work in the optomestry industry and thy told me it was really great relevant experience. I would get a letter if you can. It won't help you prior to the interview but it will definitely help in the interview.

Ok I will get a ref letter from both employers. First pharmacy closed down and second is so interesting being in the hospital...talking with all the nurses doctors...can't wait till I'm actually a part of it all! Thanks for all the info ladies:)

YES, pharmacy counts.. ANYTHING with the healthcare industry and patient interaction counts. I got a ref letter saying how long i have been working there... they can figure out how many hours that is lol.

It has been a challenge. I am in the first fast track 3 year program ever at ufv, just finishing semester 5 which is psychiatric mental health/home care... 3 clinical days left ;) then i start back up semester 6 medical/palliative sept 6th lol.. ive been going since 2009.. will grad next august

That is so exciting you are close to the end!My friend is also doing fast track and at same stage as you. I see a lot of the psychiatric patients in our pharmacy. Must be a challenge some days in there! Feel sad for a lot of them. I'll get my ref letters in order. Thanks again for all your help and info. So exciting you can see the end is near!!:yeah:

Does your friend go to UFV?? and yes its super exciting. I love my job as an ESN at Langley Memorial on the acute medical unit. you can ESN (Employed student nurse) after you complete second year. your granted up to 400 hours PAID... ESNs make around 25.50 depending on area and facility, as well you get shift premiums (paid more) when you work undesirable hours like saturday night 1930-0730 lol.. yes its been great.

Unfortunatly you dont get paid for any clinical hours for school lol. sometimes you wish you did...

Semester 1 you have like 3 weeks of old people intermediate care home

Semestr 2 is ECU (again care home) and Maternity (which is ok)

Semester 3 is Medicine and Pediatrics (This is where you begin to give medications and learn about IVs)

Semester 4 is 14 weeks of surgical (BY FAR my favorite, its all IV meds.. dressing changes, pumps, drains... you have basically every skill this semester and can do basically everything an RN does)

Semester 5 is psychiatric mental health and homecare(where you drive around and visit patients at their homes)

Semester 6 is medical/palliative.. so they are pallitative patients.. but they have severe medical issues going on, heard this is a difficult rotation.. i will find out in a couple weeks ;)

Semester 7 is public health

Semester 8 is preceptorship

BUSY BUSY

Haha thats so awesome :) We finished our last N301 exam today, i have my psych elective exam tomorrow, 2 more days of clinical and then a final evaluation and semester 5 is done.

Todays exam was kinda aweful, 4 hours of awefulness... 151 questions with 92 of them being MC, the rest written. And then we got our papers back.. haha.

im glad its over

Ohhh, you were the one that needed the psych book! I borrowed it off her just before you, with her notes! Ughh the exam sounds terrible:s I hate exams...can't handle the pressure lol. I took Philosophy also last semester which was good ... taught me how to actually study! Im taking English and statistics in September...will be nothing compared to the nursing classes once i get in!! So exciting you guys are almost done semester 5 ! Congrats:yeah:
