I've been in the business forever. It's been my experience that at Christmas time, staff members pick a resident to buy a gift for at Christmas. Anyone who doesn't get picked gets a gift from the facility. I always thought this was a lovely idea because no one gets left out.

What do all y'all do? Very few people felt like choosing a resident to buy for so this year we're asking for donations from the staff and the facility is buying all the residents the same thing. I have mixed feelings about this but at least Suzy can't complain that Mary's gift was better.

We put up a Christmas tree in our lobby. Activities goes to every long term resident and asks them what they want for Christmas. If they can't speal for themselves we usually see if they need slippers or socks or some supply/clothes or a gift certificate to the beauty shop. We keep it around $10-20. We hang their lists on a tree and it's anonymous. Everyone is welcome to pick a tag. Leftovers go to a volunteer group to finish up what staff doesn't pick. Then each unit gets their gift at their unit Christmas parties.

My activities director does an awesome job of coordinating with all the local churches to get enough gifts donated for everyone. Small community and small facility, but awesome participation.

At all my other buildings, Santa was there to hand out a gift to every resident. As the defacto house photographer, it was my job to take a picture of every resident with Santa. My eyeballs were leaky that day....they may be 98 years old, but their faces light up when they see Santa.

What an awesome idea!

we have a list of people who attend the activities program and staff members pick one. I still see a lot of blank names though.
