Hi everyone...

I have a question. I am moving to florida shortly (as soon as my car is drivable) for a pediatric homecare job. this is an area I have worked before, and also I worked at a long term/skilled care facilty for medically fragile children - most of which were non verbal, and a good majority were trached/vented. I recently got (another) phonecall from a position I applied for at an LTC facility. It is 16 hours every sat/sun (total of 32) but you get paid for 40. My question...what are your thoughts on such an agreement? I have worked hard to get into pediatrics, and ultimatly my goal is peds oncology. Would taking this job jepordize all of the work i have done to be a peds nurse or make my resume more well rounded? The DON at the facilty has called me twice so I wonder about how safe it is and the amount of work involved.

At the facility I worked at we had meds q2h so for 16 hours that would be 8 med passes and 8 straight caths...I know it is very different at adult/geri facilities but I'm not sure what to expect. The DON said that it would be meds/tx for 29 residents...I am used to 13-14 but the kiddos I cared for were alot sicker/more needy than what I would expect in a geriatric facility...right?

If anyone has thoughts/advice I would appreciate it!

The Baylor plan I'm used to is 12 hours every Saturday and Sunday...work 24 get paid for 32. !6 hour shifts two days in a row? Seems like too many hours in too short a time.

That sounds like a bad deal. I also have Baylor hours and I work 24 hours (2 12 hour shifts) and get paid for 36. Sounds like they're hosing people at that facility.

When I did Baylor it was 2 twelves, days worked 24 hours got paid for 36, nights worked 24 hours got paid for 40. We also got benefits.

This LTC sounds like they are trying to "Milk the Cow DRY" and not give time to replenish the "MILK".

Sounds like too many work hours without enough rest between. We are only allowed to work 16 hours out of 24 with 10 hours rest between shifts according to out Nurse Practice Act.

Good Luck.

I used to work two 16's and get paid for 40. LONG w/e but I had the whole week off. It worked for me.

I currently work the weekend double shift at a local nursing home. I work 16 hour shifts every Saturday and Sunday from 6:00am to 10:00pm and have Monday through Friday off. In fact, I have been working this shift on and off for the past 4 years.

The major benefit of weekend double shifts is the fact that you have 5 days off in a row, and almost nothing can beat that. The major drawback is the fact that you tend to be groggy by the time Sunday evening approaches because it is impossible to obtain more than a few hours of sleep between shifts.

Overall, I'd rather work two long days per week rather than having to come in for 5 days a week.
