About state surveys

I have been reading some old posts about state surveyors. How different does the staff act when they are there? I have worked at the same LTC for 16 years. "State" being the building doesn't bother me, but some of our staff goes wild. They are actually funny to watch. We have people coming out of offices and actually talking to residents. One year, our adminstratior (not our present one) was passing trays in the dining room and one resident asked him who he was cause she said she had never seen him before. I was wondering if this was the norm everywhere.

We had a VA survey team in our LTC facility yesterday. The surveyor touring with our DNS kept me busy for about an hour asking me all kinds of questions. The facility doesn't know how we did on the survey yet. I hope we did ok.

Just in case anyone cares- We did GREATTTTTTT on our survey. They came on Monday @ 11 a.m. and left today @ 11 am. We got a total of 3 tags on silly stuff like, our census that was posted wasn't right, and that was d/t the night nurse not communicating with the staff development person that comes around every a.m. do get that unit's census. Our facility has 2 units, and the unit i work on didnt get a single tag. This was my first time going through one, and I was nervous, but i just tried to act like they weren't even there. They're not even coming back to do a followup. I hope everyone keeps up the good work until next year!

Congratulations on a great survey! It's a relief to have it over, isn't it.:balloons: :balloons:

I started working at a local LTC facility as a Staff Dev. Coord./Infection Control Coord. in late Feb. and the state was in there the next week for the annual inspect. Well, we failed. There were so many tags I can't begin to tell you what they were. They returned in early April and we failed on some more, mainly paperwork--namely the MDS assessments. The corporate bunch came in last week (4 of them) and had some of the managers with them looking at the MDS and careplans. They tore apart the MDS person and all I heard was "I am so sick of this sh....t" and "she is so stupid".

I am ready to quit. I have never worked in such a place as this and you can't even get needed supplies. I was never oriented and am expected to train others, even though I don't know what the procedures are. No one wants to co-operate with you and the administrator talks down and is rude to the staff. I have worked in LTC since 1979 off and on but this place takes the cake. The DON is also new and talked me into staying longer (she is looking for another place to work). In this area I don't know of a good LTC facility. I am seriously thinking of quiting because I don't want to be associated with a bad facility and I hear it has a history of not doing well with the surveys. Most of the staff do seem to care for the residents and some of them have been there for years. Just had to vent!
