Hi! I'm applying to Georgia State University's ACE Track for Spring 2016. Anyone else out there also applying? :)
Hi everyone! I've been reading all the threads for a while now and finally decided to create an account myself. @Berniex312 Do you mind sharing how your meeting with Hugh Grant went today? I have similar stats as you. I met with him a month and half ago and he told me I was competitive but that was so far back. I'm afraid things might have changed. My science GPA is a 3.75. My program gpa is a 3.8. My TEAS score is a little on the low side... a 79. I have 130+ volunteer hours. I'm so terrified about getting in. I already got a denial letter from Kennesaw State University and Georgia Gwinnett College. Georgia State's program is the only one left and it's the one I want to attend. :/
I'm seriously starting to doubt Hugh's comments on how competitive we are. It seems he tells everyone good news and that we are competitive even though two people will have completley different GPA/TEAS scores. I know he's been doing this for years, but some of the stuff he says just doesn't add up.
@Mth2493 I cannot believe you were denied from GGC with those scores! Do you know what the averages are for what they accept? I was going to use that as a back up school...
Hi all! My meeting with Hugh today went ok.. He said it was very possible that I could get accepted, however I am right smack in the middle, so it is really just up in the air right now. I found out that my program GPA is a 3.53, which he said was "doable" because he had seen a few people from the previous semester get in with program GPAs in the 3.4 range. However, he said the average is a 3.7. Not to mention, the program GPA is what they put the most weight on, so I would not fret about having a lower TEAS score if your program GPA is a 3.7 or higher. Something I learned today that I was not aware of is that if you ranked in the 80th percentile on your Math, Reading, and English section on the TEAS, they give you an additional 2 points (out of a total of 40 points); science is NOT included because they use your science GPA instead.
Most importantly, at the time that I was in his office (11:00 am), only 150 people had applied SO FAR.. He said they typically get over 200, so 150 was a little low. He said that this was good news for me because the probability of more people having a lot higher stats than mine was a lot lower, so the odds are in my favor. In addition, they base who gets accepted by the average program GPA, science GPA, and TEAS. So if a majority of people having GPAs in the 3.5- 3.7 range, they will be using that as the frame for who gets accepted..so basically every semester the stats will be different. I hope that made sense.. If you all have any specific questions, feel free to ask!
Oh! And as for the essay, recommendation letters, and volunteer experience, Hugh said that pretty much everyone will get full points for those if they are good. However, the points for those are very low. They like to base your acceptance primarily off of the school work that you have done, so that is why those don't hold much weight...
@Berniex312 Wow, thanks for all that info! I can't believe only 150 people applied, but it makes sense since traditionally, less people apply in the Spring. But would that mean they'd pick people with 3.5-3.7 and a high TEAS score over someone like me with a 4.26 and 84.5? Because a lot of people seem to have like a 3.7/88 or something, which seems pretty average for the program; i'm just worried more of those people will be accepted since they have a good GPA AND TEAS score, and that's making me slightly worried even with a high GPA. Maybe i'm just being paranoid lol.
But I guess if he said the odds are in your favor, then we should all be fine. I just don't want to be too confident in myself even with a higher GPA, as that doesn't always gurantee acceptance. For last fall I know someone was accepted with a 3.7/77, and that was for ACE and when there were even more applicants. Acceptance in this program is unpredictable every semester, but hopefully, with the lower applications, we should all have higher chances :).
@hopefulrngsu I guess I worded that weirdly... No, of course someone with a higher GPA than that 3.5 - 3.7 range would definitely get in.. I was just saying hypothetically, anyone within that range would be fair game, aside from people with obviously higher scores/GPAs.. Your TEAS score is not something I would worry about.. an 84.5 is awesome! Is 4.26 your program GPA? That's stellar! I think you have a great shot of getting in!
And 150 was only the amount that had applied so far at that time of day.. I'm sure more people submitted further on in the day as well, as I had only met with him at 11:00 am.. Nonetheless, Spring typically has less applicants... But yes, I agree, acceptance seems VERY unpredictable every semester... Like I have no idea where I stand at this point.. Patience... haha
Thanks for the info Bernie! ~150 applicants and 72 spots is pretty reassuring. The program GPA confuses me. I have a previous degree from another school and I was using that GPA as my program GPA, but the pre-req sheet says program GPA is GSU core plus pre-requisites. I guess I'm not sure what GSU's core is? Can anyone clarify how program GPA is calculated?
@hopefulrngsu I couldn't believe it as well. GGC was also my backup school just in case GSU didn't accept me. I know that this time around, the students that got accepted had an average TEAS score of 85. Mine is very low in comparison to that but what really shocked me was that my friend who had the same exact stats as me (mine were a little better) got in but I did not. She also applied the semester before and got denied so maybe that played a role in her acceptance as well... And she was familiar with the people in the nursing admissions office including the nursing director. @Berniex312 Do they give you an additional total of 2 points if you are ranked in the 80th percentile in english, math, AND reading or... 2 points for each section that you rank in the 80th percentile totaling in 6 points added? Guys, I'm praying we all get in! (: I'm so nervous!

Hey Berniex312, thank you for the kind words! It made me freak out a little less knowing someone else is in the same boat is me
. I think we both have a pretty good shot! I talked to Hugh Grant at the nursing open house and he said I should be fine to get into the ACE program. Fingers crossed he's right.
@hopefulrngsu I'm glad you got the email and heard back from him. I sent an email earlier today regarding the email, so I'm sure he'll write back soon with the same reply. I'm sure he's SUPER busy right now with the deadline for applications being tomorrow.
I'm so happy I found this forum!! I've been talking my boyfriend's ear off with my concerns about getting in, he'll be happy to know I have a new avenue to voice my hopes and concerns. Good luck to you all!!
