Georgia License Denial-Clock Hours

So I moved to Georgia to get married but I had graduated in Ohio (Columbus State) with my LPN certificate. I sent in my application and after many months I was denied.

The reason that the letter states is that I was denied due to insufficient clock hours from Ohio. When I asked in what I was insufficient in (clinical, theory, pre-requs) I was informed that they could not give out that information unless I went in front of the board to petition for my license.

Well, I was finally approved for my petition on the 15th and now I am very nervous! I have so many questions and worries that I was hoping somebody may have a few clue ins! First off, I'm not sure if I'm really "petitioning", I mean, I don't expect them to lower the hours for just me but at the same time am I suppose to have something prepared? I really just want to know what steps I should take to get more hours and in what area but I also don't want to not petition if there is a small chance that I can get it appealed.

Has anybody gone through this before? What was the outcome from the board? How did you fix the insufficient clock hours?

I have emailed schools in the area but they state if it's clinical hours I need I'm pretty much out of luck...has me worried!

Any and all help would be great! My life goal is to be a nurse and it's been tough hearing all the exciting news about my classmates getting jobs while I'm still trying to get a license.

Well I know one girl that was in my class (in VA) we graduated and on one of our last days the Admin told her that her License would not transfer to Georgia. I can't remember why, but I think they said the only way to get one in georgia is to work in another state for 6 months or maybe longer, I can't remember that was in november of 2011. So I wish you luck!

the time req. should be on the website for the BON. Then check with the school which you graduated from and see how many hours that you have, voila: the answer.

It does sound like the number of clinical hours in Ohio weren't the same as in GA. I wonder if you could do a few weeks under a preceptorship at a hospital and earn those hours to comply with the GA requirement. Did you work at all as an LPN?

No, I did not work at all as an LPN, I moved a month after graduation. I was told by someone that works at the Georgia Board that even if I got my license in another state and worked, it would still not transfer because the board would still look at the school clock hours even after I have my out of state license. I did look into how many hours they require compare to what I did. My school had to send a very thorough break down of each class and how many hours spent on each subject. I've been in the process of getting my school to send me the form they used for my clock hours but so far I'm not getting answers from either one. At this point, it will just be easier for the board to tell me exactly how many I need and go from there, I was just wondering if anybody else has heard of other students going through this and how they handled it. I have heard from many people on here that the GA BON is very difficult to deal with. Good luck to you!

GA and TX apparently have the same policy advisors. I'm in the same boat as you, except that I do have a license and 2 years experience. TX will not transfer my license until I complete an LPN course and receive a diploma. I'm sorry that you are going through this. I hope your situation remedies easier than mine! Good luck!

You have my heartfelt sympathy at having to deal with the GA BON! I don't know exactly how they will deal with your situation, I can only tell you they are extremely hard to deal with and move at a snail's pace in handling any matter. I graduated LPN school in 2009 and after going back and forth with them for months (even after I submitted required documentation) literally had to file a complaint with the Secretary of State in order to have my license released. Why? Because of a DUI I had gotten TWENTY-SEVEN years previously, when I was a dumb kid of 18, which was the only legal issue I ever had in my life! I had even worked for the post office for three years delivering mail as a sub carrier (driving federal vehicles) prior to becoming a nurse. I truly wish you the best of luck! I am about to finish core classes so that I can then bridge from a LPN to RN. I can't help but wonder if I will have to go through another mess in order to get RN licensure.

I'm far from expert on this, but I know someone who was hired before she got her license. They hired her technically as a CNA, but after she received her license they changed her to LPN. Maybe you could do something like that? Talk to a rep from your local hospitals or nursing homes, maybe you could work something out to get those hours in. Good luck!

OH WOW NOW IM SCARED i SAT FOR MY NY LICENSE, BUT NEVER WORKED TRYING TO TRANSFER THEM OVER..i HOPE MINE WILL TRANSFER OVER....

I remember in LPN school that one instructor would said Your license would transfer easily to any state but if you try to transfer to Georgia you are SOL. I have heard that a couple times about Georgia actually. Wonder why its so difficult?
