Georgetown University Hospital New Grad Residency 2019

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hey everyone! I thought I would start a new thread for those who have applied to the New Grad Nurse Residency at Georgetown University Hospital for the spring/summer graduates! I graduate in May and this cohort starts July 22nd if I get accpeted! The application opened up on November 16th and I applied right away, really hoping I get it. It sounds like it's a great program. I applied for the NICU, by the way! What units has anyone else applied for so far?

Specializes in Neuro ICU.

Hey I interviewed with them that February of this year. I did have Extern experience with leadership in my SNA as well. Home health caregiver should count as experience as would an extern. I'm not sure how many people were offered jobs. It depends on the unit. I got offered a position for the OR but declined because I got offered a different job at Duke. For your cover letter, just be yourself and talk about what you have accomplished. It's your time to shine.

@1425oes Thanks for your quick reply! As for the cover letter, do you suggest talking about why we want to work specifically at MedStar Georgetown (i.e. magnet)? or should we focus more on what we can bring to the hospital?

Hi everyone! I graduated last may and interviewed for a position last february (did not accept, withdrew after accepting a position at Hopkins) But i remember feeling so in the dark about application processes at different hospitals. But my personal experience with Georgetown, coming from someone who interviewed in Peds, I do not think they accept applications without some sort of experience out side of school clinical and prefer an externship in the area in which you are applying! That may not be the case for all units including those on the adult side. In regards to a cover letter, Georgetown already knows they are a great hospital, I would focus on yourself and let things be known that maybe aren't so apparent in your resume itself. Talk about why they should want YOU! Good luck everyone ?

Hi @2019Newgrad thanks for your comment! Did you completed a NICU externship prior to applying to residency programs? I have only have brief CNA experience (summer). Do you know if Georgetown considers a semester long senior practicum to be "outside of school clinical"?

I hope this helps someone because I felt so lost when I applied, but I interviewed last Feb & accepted my ICU offer! I had previous extern experience & my Capstone was in the ICU. I think if you have some kind of experience like a job/ externship/ capstone in the area you’re applying to you’ll be fine! Also, for the cover letter I would focus on what sets you apart from others & don’t be scared to show your personality! Hope you all who are applying come join Georgetown because it’s a great place to start as a new grad!!

I had a summer externship before senior year on a adult med surge floor and a senior year NICU capstone!

Hi! New to this thread. I just applied today for the Summer 2020. I am interested in Peds! I currently work as a tech in a pediatric med-surg floor, so I am hoping that helps!!

Hi everyone! I applied to the summer '20 program too (hopefully NICU)! I'm so glad I found this thread- I had so many questions and I feel much better now. Do you guys live around here? And are you applying to other hospitals in the area? I definitely am (CNMC, Fairfax, Hopkins and others not in the area) because the NICU is so competitive but I'm really hopeful about Georgetown! @2019Newgrad @NewGradRN2019 I read that you guys are both new grads in the NICU- how is it going? If you have any tips for someone who is absolutely set on the NICU I would greatly appreciate it!! Hope you're loving it!

Hi everyone! Has anyone heard back about the winter residency starting in February? I got an offer for the transplant unit and wanted to see who else would be starting then!

Does anyone know the name of the person whom we should address our cover letters to/head of HR?

Has anyone that applied to the Summer 2020 program heard anything yet?

@kb405 hey! I applied to the Summer 2020 program on November 20th and haven't heard anything. I've been checking my application every so often but nothing has changed. I think I read somewhere that they're supposed to let us know if we've been chosen for an interview by the end of December, so I feel like we should hear soon?! I'm not sure how they'll reach out though. Let me know if you hear from them and I'll do the same!
