work shops suggestions

Nursing Students General Students

I just got a letter in the mail and my school is having some pre nursing workshops ( I am accepted into the program already and will start in January).

they are offering these works shops one day a week before school begins, I have several choices so I am not sure which I should choose.

8:30-10:00is beginning documentation or Head to Toe Assessments it does specify beginning documentation is specificily for my course, however it lists others as well, Assessments says it is recomended for all students who wish to develop and improve this skill.

second I have to choose from Test scuccess, Dosage calculation review and Critical thinking skills for nurses. I think the critical thinking one would be most important however, I am worried because I took dsoage calc over a year ago, I probably could use a review!

Whic are the 2 from each catagory You think I could most use? It says I need to register early courses fill, so I have to decide by Monday.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Tele, IM, OB/GYN, neuro, GI.

I would take the head to toe and the critical thinking class. Alot of places are using computerized charting with drop down lists now or charting by exception and I think the head to toe class would teach you on the subtle things to look for and where/ how to look. Plus in my experience when you're in clinicals the instructors all have specific ways they like you to write things. The critical thinking class should help with clinicals and also test questions because most schools use NCLEX style questions on the tests. While doasage calculations are important if you've taken this class before I would got to a bookstore and just buy a dosage calculations book and review. I wish they would have offered something like this where I go it would have been very helpful for the students that are struggling in these areas.

I agree with Tampagirl. You can always get a dosage calculations book and study it on your own. The other classes all have something to offer to get you on the right track. Congratulations on starting school. Wish you success in your program.

Thanks my real concern is between the documentation and the assessments. The documentation specifically says recomended for first semester RN and the Assessment does not say this but it's at the sametime.

The critical thinking and test taking stratagies are also at the sametime. I am so glad they offer these workshops and really excited I just want to take them all LOL.

Can you team up with another classmate and take opposite classes and share the knowledge with each other?

I sure wish my school offered this type of thing- it sounds great! I think I would choose the assessment one and critical thinking. Where you already took a calc class, this will all come back once you start to use it. Go for something you havent had. Also as far as documentation, you will be taught that at the facility as there are many styles. there are also some good books that are not expensive to do with documentation. Getting a jump on critical thinking and assessment will help you the most for sure no matter what the recommendations say.

Well I signed up this afternoon, Documentation, Critical thinking and ADA guidlines (for writing papers). The documentation I chose because it said it was suggested for first semester nursing and ADA said it was mandatory. I chose critical thinking because if I have learned one thing about nursing it's critical thinking is the key LOL.

Its a great idea to team up with someone else I will see if someone else is taking assessment and testing success. I am thrilled they offer these workshops I hadn't heard anything at all about them doing this.
